Pobrecita!!!
Poor little Frida. She has a place on her haunch she has been chewing and chewing at. It has become infected and when a course of antibiotics didn’t heal it because she kept chewing on it, the doctor’s decree was that she has to wear this cone around her head for two weeks and go through another ten day round of antibiotics. Can you see by her worried expression and turned down ears how much she hates it, is puzzled by it, wonders if she’s being punished?
When I first put it on she went charging around the house knocking against everything, tipping over pots and little tables, ricocheting off the edges of furniture, even running into me!. When I took her to her bed, she just put the cone down on the floor with her nose to the floor, curled her tail down between her legs, compressed her body to the point where I feared she would implode, and just stood there as if made of stone. She wouldn’t respond to treats, my voice, pats, hugs. She was mortified and so she insisted on also being ossified!
Finally, I had to remove the cone because she refused to eat even a dog biscuit, let alone her dinner. After dinner I heard her chewing on it again, so I had to put the collar on again. Poor little girl.
It’s heart breaking to see her like this, but it’s better than the alternative … then you will be the pobrecita. 😦 Hang in there … !

This is quite sad. It’s the worst with animals because you can’t explain to them that you aren’t trying to punish them.

I know. Breaks my heart. When I let her out this morning, she just stood in the doorway for 5 mins. looking out. It alters her entire reality…and she didn’t take a drink that I know of. They all drink from the pool or hot tub..their big water dish. I may have to take it off for her to eat and drink.

We have a cat and due to an idiot neighbor they decided to keep him inside and only take him out for “walks” on a lead. He wouldn’t move at all with the harness on but now he doesn’t even notice it. This is a bit different as harnesses really aren’t that disruptive; however, the way he acted with it on I never would have thought he’d get over it. And also, of course, this took many months, which is a longer time frame.

Thanks, live free. Very sweet of you to give that reassurance. I’ll try putting it back on her if she will come in to seep tonight.

“Ossified,” LOL. Dogs do epitomize the dramatic emotions, sometimes.

I did reduce the circumference a bit, but I think if I reduced the distance out from the middle, it would mean she could get to her sore…although she can get to it now because she vanished this morning and hasn’t been seen. She’s in the yard though..Oh. There she is..

Oh dear, oh dear, that poor baby. Her auntie is mortified it got worse on her watch. I’m not all that religious but the impulse is to call a prayer circle to the Great Dog. No, I am not being facetious.
But still, thanks for the photo, because it gives me hope for her spirit. Clearly she is past the terror of her apparatus, but still shamed. But I can tell she’s thinking. Soon she’ll be ready to deal with the inconvenience. Possibly by tricking you in some way. Beyond the “Why me?” and the “What did I do to deserve this?” I do see a flicker of “This thing has me pissed.” and “I WILL get you for this.” Oh wait. Never mind. I see by your last email she just did. Let me know if you ever catch her to put that thing back on again. She’s ba-ack.”

Nope it didn’t get worse when she was at your house…and I put off going to the dr. when I got back. It is mama’s fault only. I just don’t want to risk the surgery but Ladrone claimed that was just when done by incompetent surgeons and that they are very careful…or for a few days until the swelling goes down. (ie that they can’t control their bowels.
When I get home, perhaps I’ll have them do the surgery.

I once had a new wing on a vet’s office named after my Golden Retreiver Roxie. She had every affliction known to veterinary science. Two ACL surgeries, countless skin ailments, allergies to everything, she had it all. Give Frida some love from me! I know how she feels.

Now Rudy. Is that hyperbole or did they really name a wing after her? Either way, I’m sorry for your girl and for you and I think this is a topic worthy of writing more about. When my beloved cat Bear drowned in my pool after making the long trip down to Mexico twice, my brother-in-law bought two cages for his local pet shelter and had plaques put on them that said, “In memory of a sleek gray cat named Bearcat.” I was very touched.

Well, perhaps a bit of embellishment, perhaps I should have said “I wrote him so many checks he built a new wing.” And good on your BiL, I’ll bet he realized how important Bear was to you.
