Last Open Mike of the Season at Palapa Joe’s

(Click on first photo to enlarge all photos, then click on arrows to proceed through gallery.)

Palapa Joe’s was pulsing with the heartbeat of its last open mike of the season last night as poets and musicians held  a jam-packed house in thrall.  It’s rare that a bar crowd stays quiet for 2 1/2 hours while entertainment is being staged, but that was the case as act after act wowed us.  Emcee Betty held it all together with her easy repartee and humor. (If you noticed that one of these photos doesn’t belong here, you caught me!  None of the photos of Ron Stock turned out, so I used one of him taken earlier in the day at our writer’s group. )

It is wonderful to be part of such a vibrant and creative community here in La Manzanilla! Thanks for documenting the last Open Mic at Palapa Joe’s. It’s always such a pleasure to see you on the dance floor Judy!

I know, Denise and every time I’ve come there seem to be more activities worth participating in. I always delude myself into thinking I’m coming here to get away and retreat from life but instead I am always thrust into the thick of it. That music issuing from Palapa Joe’s is like those cartoon cooking aromas seen to pick the characters up off their feet and to float them over towards “what’s cookin’.” It La Manz, there is always a pot of something delicious brewing on the stove and often it’s to your drumbeat.

Yes. This town pretty much closes up in the summer when it is too hot for anyone to stir much unless it is a necessity. Most people leave, restaurants and bars close, as do gift shops. Aside from grocery stores and other stores catering to the necessities, most businesses close during the summer.
