Remember when padded envelopes used to be filled with the fuzzy stuff?  That was kapok. It was also used as packing material. This is where it comes from!

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

We never had them but I think my grandma did and I certainly remember those envelopes and packing sheets with brown paper on the outside and kapok inside.

Kapok Tree? You have Kapok trees where your are? I grew up with Kapok … my baby bolster, my childhood mattress, the sofa cushions … I used to help mum stuff Kapok into pillows when they got flat & out of shape. I miss those stiff Kapok (heavy as hell) mattresses, excellent for sore backs.

There are also faux kapok trees along the Carretera called silk floss trees, but these are the real thing, I believe. The silk floss tree fibers can be used in much the same way as the kapok. The trees in these pictures are across from the theater on Rio Bravo.
