This tabachine bush was covered with butterflies, but they are almost impossible to photograph. They are constantly lighting for a few seconds and then flying off, circling, lighting––but never long enough to get much more than a blue. I felt fortunate to get one good shot.

I am not sure if I made the like for the flower or the butterfly, although they both deserve it. We also have swallow tails, but not in such a dark colour.

I couldn’t find an image for exactly this swallowtail on Google images, but I think its shape and the similarity of its coloring and markings to other swallowtails brands it as such, don’t you? There are dozens and dozens of them swirling around this bush. I once took a video of the same butterflies swarming around a tabachine in a neighbor’s yard. I should try to find it.

Rich, vivid colours … I’ve never seen a black swallowtail before. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for commenting, Sally. I love them, too… More interesting in freeze frame, but beautiful ballet movements as well… dozens at a time swooping and curling.
