Stubborn
Some minds are so locked, they will not open to the touch.
Even “Open Sesame!” will not budge them much.
It seems their former mindsets hold them fast within their clutch,
squeezing off the access of new ideas and such.
Perhaps old ways of thinking have just become a crutch,
until they have that stubbornness oft noted in the Dutch!
I like to think my mind remains open to new thought.
For most of my life, I have been willing to be taught;
but when it comes to bigots, their efforts come to naught.
By the likes of Donald Trump, my attention can’t be bought,
and so I try to keep my ears entirely where he’s not,
for if I have to listen, I soon feel them growing hot.
I know what comes from such a man is likely to be rot,
so when I hear his puffed-up voice, my patience is soon shot.
With me his crass pontificating always comes to naught––
his words with fear and loathing usually fraught.
His hysterics reminiscent of Hitler and Pol Pot
dangle bait before a fish not willing to be caught.
A mind as closed as my mind will not open to his touch.
He never will win ingress with fear tactics and such.
Thank God my former mindsets hold me fast within their clutch,
squeezing off the access of bigotry and such.
Perhaps old ways of thinking have just become my crutch,
or maybe all my stubbornness is just because I’m Dutch!
The prompt today was “Open.”

Have you ever reviewed Myer-Briggs Personality Indicator? BTW Nice poem, too. Cheers Jamie

You mean have I taken it? Yes. I even have it in some carton of “stuff” in the garage. Must go through them sometime. I moved them down 15 years ago and have never gone through them.

Yes, but the point is the irony that the narrator is railing against a quality in someone else that they themselves display.. Since we think we are right, we justify it in ourselves and criticize our opponents for the same quality. Not justifying bigotry–just saying if we expect others to open up to our point of view, we need to be willing to at least listen to them even if we disagree violenty. I’m incapable of this. In some cases, I am totally unable to do this, especially as regards Mr. Trump. I can’t stand to listen to the man so depend on what others say about him.. and can’t even really stand to so that. Thankfully all are not like me and some are willing to listen and rebut. The real person I am satirizing is myself.

Yes, but Mr. Trump will say a lot to get elected. Once in that position they have to drop the rhetoric.
For the balance of Senate Congress and the Presidential office. All work to ensure neither, can run the show. Unless it’s in the “House of Cards”.
For myself Ronald Reagan, was the worst. A puppet whose strings were constantly being jerked. They’re all bad, really. Far less, than a country should have. So who really runs Mexico? Cheers Jamie.

Enjoyed this! A very interesting little loop your ‘logic’ takes here. 🙂
Ah yes. What WE espouse is clearly right — common sense that everyone should open their minds to. But what we detest is something no one else should listen to, either. So these days we get a lot of political correctness that preaches tolerance for all, yet is quite intolerant of differing opinions.
As one famous someone once said, The purpose of having an open mind is to close it again on something solid. Being “open” should produce some positive gain, not just a head full of confusion.
As to Donald Trump, he’s definitely a curiosity, very anti-PC. As neutral observers, we conclude he’s like a rubber ball bouncing around, hitting this and that, but it’s mainly showmanship. Once he’s elected we’ll see — for better or for worse — what he’s really all about.

No no no no no! Once he’s not elected, lets see what playground he meanders over to next.
