Not Perpetually in Awe

I will admit that the howling dog in last night’s sunset was awesome, but the pizza wasn’t!!!

Remember back when “awesome” was a word applied to miles of glaciers breaking off in one fell swoop or solar flares or the birth of a child? A few years ago, I had something to say about my feelings over  its present usage, where it is more commonly applied to a good slice of pizza or a friend’s new dress. See my complaints here:

Awe-inspiring somehow doesn’t carry the sting for me that awesome does. It’s more a personal statement and choice than the all-inclusive, ubiquitous “Awesome!”

Howdy Judy, Uh huh, yes as always good. Yet, awesome? Nope my jaw did not drop. It takes a lot for that …. the doggy in the window was nice, too. English usually understate things. It’s in our nature, so awesome is just … too much. I had a friend who used the word all the time. I found it grating but never said anything. Let them figure it out for themselves. Cheers Jamie.
