Imprudent.

Imprudent

An hour ’til midnight and still I’d not
written anything but rot.
The problem is, I’m not a student
of anything that smacks of “prudent.”
Especially when it comes to writing.
How can prudent be exciting?
A friend from whom I asked advice—
a guy who’s usually nice—
said, “Just write a limerick.”
“Yech!” I screamed. They make me sick!”
The problem is, time after time,
they are not funny and do not rhyme.
His advising role I here recuse,
and declare him as my anti-muse.

(This poem is based on a real conversation at the end of which I declared that I didn’t want to talk to him for 20 minutes, at the end of which I’d have a poem.  Done!!!  Not much, but better than a limerick! And I finished, proofed, tagged and posted in exactly 20 minutes.)

The prompt today is “prudent.”

Yes. I’m amazed at that re/ poetry, but what it does is force me to make a choice and pursue it rather that quibble about what I’m going to write about. In college, I always did write all my papers at the last minute so shouldn’t be surprised at that.

Same here. And, I think my best papers were written when I was the busiest. Maybe the time just forces choice. So many possible things to say, but ultimately we have to pick one and run with it.

I once wrote 11 papers in three days. Eight of them were for a Shakespeare class and should have been written one every two weeks during an entire term. I lived on NoDoz and had a little breakdown by the end. I vowed never to do that again but my thesis was done on pretty much the same schedule, being run across town page-by-page by friends to my typist.

You’d know I”d have to defend limericks! But have to admit that what passes for a limerick these days makes my teeth curl. No respect for the strict rhyme and rhythm that makes a limerick a limerick. (Though this is not true of the Saturday Evening Post limerick competition where I was a runner-up in the Nov/Dec round not that I’m patting myself on the back or anything.)
