Subtropical Garden

Since I live below the tropic of Cancer, the varieties of plants that not only survive but thrive in my garden are manifold.  Here are a few of the things that you would find in my garden if you came to visit, as well as the reasons why I love living here:

I have a gardener who comes for 13 hours a week! For what it would probably cost for 1 hour of grass-cutting in the states. And I pay him three times the usual wage. Another nice thing about living in Mexico. You can still afford to pay for services. Try not to hate me.

Wow. That was fast! Almost as good as envy-free! I was about to get in the pool and the first rain of the rainy season decided to visit. It is still raining. Now I get to see if the skylight leaks!!!

Ha. Unfortunately that skylight is really high up in the dome of my living room, so when water drops, it splashes all over. No easy out, m’dear. But, last night it rained and it didn’t leak at al. Fingers crossed.

Snakes have two sets of eyes. One set is the normal eyes that you see, and they detect color quite well. But they also have vision pits that detect heat and “see” living creatures like an infrared detector. There is no getting away from a snake once you’re spotted. That closed door won’t help. Luckily most snakes are more likely to retreat than attack

Fascinating. I had never heard that before. This was actually a lizard. He was hurt and I put him on the wall so the dogs wouldn’t bother him. Sadly, he died a few minutes after I took this photo. His eyes and mouth seemed to be the only parts still functioning. That’s why I didn’t show his body.
