Lazy Bones
The greater portion of the day
had already passed away
by the time she raised her head
and deigned to quit her lonely bed.
She fed the cat and fed the dog,
then hit the button and fed her blog.
The words poured out like kibble, then
she went back to bed again!
It’s true she is a lazy bones,
ignoring doorbells, texts and phones
until it is her choice to rise
to face the possible surprise
that the night might still present—
wondering where the daylight went.
‘”Here sleeps,” her epitaph will say,
“one who slept her life away.”
In case you are wondering,
(This is not me. I’m up at eight
to answer pounding on my gate.
It is my alter-ego, perhaps—
that side of me that I let lapse—
that draws me into daylight naps
and tempts me to ignore the phone.
That asks for afternoons alone.)
The prompt today was portion.
I like this a lot, especially the ending.

Clever! With N-24 (sleep *timing* disorder), I have often been accused of sleeping my life away because I DO NOT rise with the sun – at least not until it is overhead. ::sigh::
Some day I will begin to make good on my threat to call all who have said that to me during the times I am awake (and still working) and they are not!
Maybe a few 3-5 AM calls to say, “WHAT? Time’s a-wasting while you sleep your life away – you won’t believe how much better you’ll feel if you change your hours” might close a few mouths and open a few minds. 🙂
DO I DARE? (The first week of June is Sleep Disorder Awareness Week, btw.)

Madelyn, I don’t have an excuse for it, but I tend not to go to sleep until 3 AM. Sometimes 4. I still usually get up at 8 or 9, but this may be why I’ve been so tired lately. You think?

Duh! 🙂
Have you checked out DSPS (delayed sleep phase syndome) or DSPD (disorder). You actually *might* have an excuse for your “extreme owl” tendencies.

I can fall asleep. I just can’t make myself give up on the day so long as there is anything else to do! Night is so lovely. No interruptions. Interesting sounds. Dogs talking to each other. Owls hooting. I do my pool exercises under the stars–usually after midnight. Just a magic time. And, I can’t be in the sun due to pigment disorders, so no worry about that.

As a melanoma survivor I can’t do sun either – and a midnight swim under the moonlight would be more compelling than hitting the hay for me as well!
