The Beard

I’ve always loved beards.  When my husband Bob shaved his off as a surprise after 12 years of marriage, I didn’t recognize him when he met me at the door. I thought it was a friend of ours. We went out to a party that night and I introduced him to our friends, who had also never seen him without a beard, as my brother. No one caught on all night long until we started close-dancing.  We got some strange looks before we finally admitted our little joke.  He grew the beard back!!!

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

When my wife first met me, I had a beard. We’d been married for about 35 years and, having never seen me clean-shaven, she asked me to shave it off, which I did. As soon as she saw me, she said, “Grow it back!”

Love the pictures. You guys are so young! Kevin shaved his mustache without telling me after we were together about 8 years. I totally freaked out. Couldn’t look at him for weeks. Didn’t realize so many others had a similar reaction!

I felt superficial because it bothered me so much, but I, like you, had problems relating to Bob until he grew it back. I really did feel like he was a different person and I wanted the old one back.

I have to share with you this comment by my friend Bruce, made on Facebook so it didn’t show up here:

Bruce Alan Horn: My parents used to tell the story of the first time I saw my father without a beard. I was about two and running in and out of the bathroom as he was shaving, talking to him all the while until he finished and rinsed his face off and I burst into tears at the sight of this complete stranger standing there where moments before my father had been.
