It’s an exquisite loss, your going away,
and it’s also timely, I’m given to say.
You may find it inane that I’m saved while you’re lost,
but it’s true that some friendships come at a cost.
You’ve departed, it’s clear. This I so plainly see,
but your leaving has given me something back: me!
Prompt words today are timely, inane, lost and exquisite.

Great statement of independence! I have to report that sharing your poem in my class started a very productive discussion and contributed to students’ understanding of material in a creative and amuzing manner – thank you again!

I was honored to be asked, Dolly.

I love the term ‘exquisite loss!’ It’s not often that we view such losses as exquisite, though in most cases they turn out to be just that, and for the reason your poem suggests!

It used to be said, when I was a lass, that the definition of a loser was that when he or she left, you felt like someone had arrived.

Some people improve our life when they enter it and others when they leave.

Oh yes, there’s definitely a connection between your poem and my current situation – although my son wouldn’t have left if I hadn’t thrown him out and got a restraining order.

Someone close to me is going through exactly the same process. Letting someone determined to destroy himself bring you down with him doesn’t help either one of you.
