Waiting in the Dark

Waiting in the Dark

Why are you waiting in the dark
listening to the wind’s sharp bark?
Elsewhere is diversion enough––
Internet and other stuff.
Distraction is the modern mode,
emoticons to speak in code.
Don’t place yourself upon a shelf.
Come take a photo of yourself
and post it on your Facebook wall.
Introspection won’t do at all.
Log onto Tinder and make a date.
Only losers sit and wait.

For the dVerse Poets theme of “Waiting.” But, since I missed the post cutoff by 54 minutes, I’ll post it here!

About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Ah smiling I am. When I think about it….I think the generations beyond the Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood are not used to waiting. Instant reaction…if not satisfaction or gratification. I often thought that the 1-2-3-4-5-etc fast moving, fast changing segments on Sesame Street were the start of that….or maybe the cartoon Road Runner???? That old phrase, “take time to smell the roses” now relates to posting the photo and then looking back at it a hundred times in the next 2 hours to see how many “likes” you got for it! Oh my…..

Even we boomers can be infected with impatience. Ten years ago it took a full minute to download one image, now it’s a tenth of a second. I work with 7-9 pages open at the same time, and hop from one to the other like a lightning bug. Oddly getting tons more work done just speeds up time. 4-5 hours a day race by for me.

Sounds familiar, Glenn. The difference is that we are posting photos of the life and surroundings we observe, not the dread selfies..and we are writing more than 10 second bites. I’ve found you don’t have to be in the same room with someone to have a meaningful relationship. And I do get out in life. After all, I’ve gotta have something to post on my blog! ;o)

Interesting, the post it dilemma, ‘only losers sit and wait’. Ironic but the darkness is there and perhaps some virtual interaction helps. However, not sure waiting, for responses always healthy. But then there’s posting for Dverse!

Hey Judy — Hi poet!. Wanted to let you know I am “temporarily” sightless in my right eye from a retinal disease. It is a struggle fir me to write, but I will still wrote my pieces, going very slowly. Reading at any length is extremely difficult, and causes painful headache — so wanted to say thanks for contributing to OLN. But I won’t be able to read what you wrote, yet I wanted to visit. I spent a little time writing this best I could with one eye, i copied it, and I am pasting it in here to say hi. Got an operation coming up in about a week when the infection is down. Hopefully things will get back to normal.thanks, Rob

I hope all works out perfectly for you, Rob. I hope at the very least that you aren’t in pain. Do you have a program on your computer that will read text to you? Remarkable that you took the trouble to write this. Do you ever read audible books? They have saved me at times. Please let us know how your surgery turns out…
