Old Friends

Old Friends

Like a well-worn garment rubbed thin by life,
I’m becoming translucent,
my secrets still partially obscured,
lest you be inundated with the whole of me.

Friends of long duration,
we see each other
as through a light fog,
that scathing inflexibility of youth
loosened in us,
as I grant you the foibles
I hope you grant in me.

Prompt words today are translucent, inundate, flexibility, scathe.

We three have been friends since college–57 years. Egads. The couple are my sister and her husband. Luckily, after all these years my sister is still a best friend as well. Lucky me.

I’ve lived in close proximity to these friends no more than 11 years over our 55 years of knowing each other, but that doesn’t seem to have affected the closeness at all. I’ve usually lived thousands of miles away from my sister as well, but old affections like old habits are impossible to break. There is such a deep comfort in being with someone who knows all of your history and most of your secrets.
