6:30 A.M. While the pooches were still sleeping, I got up and went out to clear the night’s cache of blown leaves and petals from the pool, then did my hour of exercises. 8:00 A.M. I took this photo of my chimney stack reflected in the water on the top of my hot tub pool cover, then thankfully placed my camera/phone on a nearby chair before attempting to climb down into the hot tub. Slipped on algae I had somehow missed cleaning from the pool stairs and fell, landing with my head in the hot tub, one leg in the pool, one on the bench in the hot tub, twisting and gashing and spraining my left ankle. Thank God I didn’t hit my head! 9:35, sitting at my desk with my leg up on a bench, icing down the ankle, whose swelling has gone down remarkably, milking the Internet for sympathy. Perils of living alone. Glad it turned out as well as it did. Not broken. I can still walk on it. Just bruised and swollen and muscle-sore.
Ouch, Judy! Take care of yourself and feel better!

Definitely one of the perils of living alone. We always have to be careful but we fall anyway.

It is always when I’m in a hurry, Hammad..I just need to slow down.

I hope it still feels that way tomorrow. I’m also a bit “lurchy” these days. I have more trouble going DOWN the stairs than up. I hardly ever fall UP stairs. Rest and be careful. We are fragile.

I was noted for falling up the stairs into assembly hall when I was in High School. My nickname was “Grace.” Really.

Well you did get sympathy from this direction, by someone who has been there, done that~! But my hot tub is located with a wall about a foot away on two sides and a little over that on a third side where I get in and out. The fourth side is a wider passageway and is open to the sauna. I have put strong metal hand holds those three sides, but unfortunately your pool is more open. The other day I went in, forgetting that i had just taken a shower, not long before, and my feet turned out to still be very slippery,
Wow If I could dance like that on purpose, I would be the hit of the ball~! My friend has gifted me some of those Non slip sandals to wear while in the pool, (A dumb idea, which I was careful not to tell her~!) When I am alone, putting on anything that will slow the benefit of the hot tub is not to my liking. As you know I have no close neighbors and my Man Cave is very well constructed for privacy, So at those times I am only wearing my birthday suit~!

Ha.. re/ your dance! Yes.. You must be even more careful than me. If I’m outside, at least I think my next door neighbors could eventually hear me if I screamed really loud. Sam, perhaps you should get one of those necklace alarms just in case…I would if I were really remote.

Yes, I do have one of those “help I’ve fallen and can’t get up” things but I am so far out, that usually no one would hear me. But I have tried not to climb ladders and do dumb things unless someone is around to pick me up when I fall. I also try to have clear paths to walk, except for those rocks outside so as not to trip. However you already know how stubborn I am, and often I do dumb things too, that is part of enjoying life~!
Those hand holds both in my spa and also in my bathrooms are a carryover from Shirley worrying about me, from long ago. She also insisted on a single level floor and 36 inch doors when we built the house. And every time I turned around she had some kind of pill or vitamins that I should take. But as you also know it was her who needed such things. The wide doors and flat surfaces came in handy when she could no longer walk and needed a wheelchair because I could no longer carry her.
My kids tell me that I need to get rid of this very large isolated place, but this is where I am happy, and would rather not live, if it must be in one of those retirement places. My numerical age is high but my mind is still sharp, and I do promise to be careful, even if I sometimes don’t.
I have a doctor’s appointment on Friday to fix the problems with my aggravated carpal tunnel syndrome, which I aggravated by using a power saw too much, and now both hands hurt too much to do much more typing or sawing tree limbs for a while~! (But I can still drive to the doctor~!)
A small hand rail or grab post at the steps may be a good addition, because like me, you are going to need to enjoy the life you built for yourself, just as I try to do~!
Doesn’t it “piss you off” when someone says “Oh Judy you should be more careful~!” That to me is a thoughtless comment, because I already know that, but still do have a life to live~! (good for a less than pleasant poem isn’t it~!)

Well, it is a good reminder, though. I’m trying to make my house as safe as possible. Know the vulnerable spots but as you say, gotta live your life.

I had just been thinking I have to be careful because the steps collect algae.. I had scrubbed them all off with a brush but didn’t think to do the same with the hot tub bench which also serves as a step from the pool to the hot tub.

Having steep steep stairs in our home falls are something I have come to worry about. I’m glad you are OK, but you know with the bruising and sprain you really are not OK. Sounds silly to say ” be careful”, but there it is!

Not silly. I tell myself this every day. I’ve built walkways through all my garden and sold all my gorgeous Oaxacan rugs. Thinking of having the three stairs in the hall down to my bedroom made into a ramp. Having my pool redone. Just takes one little slip.
