Timekeepers

Timekeepers

My dogs have clocks for stomachs.
I don’t know how they do it.
They value things by the extent
to which a dog can chew it.

Their feeding time is 8 AM
and without exception,
at precisely 7:59,
they demand  my attention

by pouncing on my stomach,
rousing me from sleep
so our kibbles appointment
I am sure to keep.

It happens every morning,
daily without exception.
It does no good for me to try
to practice a deception

by pulling covers over head
and feigning a deep sleep,
for my canine companions
have agendas I must keep.

Grumbling, I roll out of bed
to pee and then to sprint
to fulfill their 8 o’clock feeding
with no further hint!

So, seeing that I post each day
faithfully by nine,
do not merely credit me.
My incentive is canine.

Mine too. I’ve trained them (or vice versa) that in winter the backdoor is closed and they go out at 7, 8, and 9 and come in for a cookie. It’s the cookie that sets the clock! Breakfast is when I get up and supper between 3 and 4. Their stomachs are clocks, too.

I’m glad it isn’t just the Duke! Actually, though, thinking back — ALL our dogs have had an unfailing ability to know when it is dinner or snack time — though for some, snack time was anytime anyone was near or in the kitchen.

Our cats were pretty good timekeepers too!

Very cute, Judy. My cats know it is Friday morning when they get their special treat in a human dish on top of the kitchen table. If I dawdle too much with making coffee, I get a trio of agitated meows.

I loved your poem. Annie informs me when it is exactly 6 AM for her breakfast and play time. If I don’t go outside right after feeding her she starts bringing in her toys to remind me to play with her. Her nighttime feeding is 5 PM. If I am late she lays her head on my lap and looks at me like she is dying.
