These bromeliads are air plants that grow in profusion on high line wires in Mexico. Their sticky seeds are carried here by perching birds and seem to thrive on whatever nourishes them in the air. Click on photos to enlarge.

In places they cover the wires much more thickly.

I always found it interesting in tropical areas where they will find a place to hang. In South America, some roofs are covered with them. We have a similar maybe related plant here called ball moss. Because it is more apparent in trees that have very little foliage, people think that it has killed the tree, but that is not true, they take nothing from the tree at all except sunlight.

I’ll check to see if ball moss is another name for them.

Yes ball moss is a type of tillandsia as well. A close relative.

Very cool! I’ve had a few air feeding plants in our home before.

I’ll have to show this post to my wife. She has many of these posted around the house.

On your electrical and telephone wires?

Not likely in wintertime New England! She has them in the house on window sills and shelfs. If I see them in a store they make nice little presents for her.
