Upon Running into a Former Best Friend
Don’t give me cause to regret our reunion.
Don’t bring back to mind our former disunion.
Don’t lament my career or cuss at my kids—
those actions that once put us into the skids—
dissolving our friendship and our former ties
when I’d had enough of your conniving lies.
Don’t inveigle or bemoan your lack of a pension.
Past times I’ve come through I won’t bother to mention.
And if you’ve a reaction and want to explode,
do me a favor. Take it on the road!!!

Yes. The kindest act some “friends” can do is to leave us alone.

Nice use of ‘inveigle’ 👏 A strong an unapologetic write, Judy 👍

Thanks, Shaun. Must admit, I looked up “inveigle.” One of the words you think you know the meaning of, but have to make sure!

I often have to do that too 👍

LOL, Judy! I don’t know how you did it but the tension of such a reunion (common to us all!) in your poem for me just dissipates into one of such humor and wit that I feel however it goes, the last word will be yours! Impeccable meter and rhyme — of the sort that makes me re-read out of pure poetic pleasure. 🙌🙂

Thanks, Dora..It is fiction but actually a compilation of leftover feelings I might have for a few people from my past. The prompt made me do it!

I think there always are regrets as we can remember better times at the beginning of the friendship. We long for those times, not the ones near the end of the friendship.

You said a mouthful in this one, and it sounds like for good reason. Each one of them can be the proverbial nail in the coffin that kills a friendship. You call me back to the loss of a friendship that lasted through 40 years or so, starting when we were both 10. It pains me to think about it ending even now but at the same time it needed to happen. Great theme for the prompt, Judy. Hoping it was pure fiction.

It was fiction, Lisa…but also an amalgam of various people I’ve come across during my loooong lifetime.

OK good, I guess? All concentrated into one person would be a bit much.

you know how to stand up for yourself. So I wont worry about your reunion. That photo goes so well w the poem!

I think I took that photo in a tiny village we stopped at when Patti and I took a cruise through the Greek Islands. I get all the names mixed up. That was actually the complete width of the street!
