After 15 Years

Your memory                                                   cuts so sharply
through my dream’s beginning that I wake,
gasping like a fish on the sand
left by some fisherman
too intent upon his next catch
to end it cleanly.

In its tight skin,
I gasp for air,
rise as it cannot rise
and like you cannot rise
out to that night sea air
which is the only coolness
in a month of burned days.

My memory, curving round,
pulls in the memory of you
like gills seeking to understand
the waterless air.

Landed by some bigger fisherman
whose bait you couldn’t resist,
“Oh,” you said, just “Oh,”
before you took the hook,
slipping from my grasp
as I held on, held on,
let go.

Proud Flesh

Proud Flesh

If pride cometh before a fall,
it’s best if we aren’t proud at all.
Without pride, we’ll scale the heights––
take all the medals, win all the fights.

Hubris seems to be passé–
a quality that ruins our day.
So lest you wish your luck to crumble,
best practice how to be more humble!

Proud flesh is an excessive growth of granulation tissue that has the appearance of cauliflower. It usually develops over an open wound, and most often occurs in areas of excessive tension and motion. The swollen flesh surrounding a healing wound.http://www.doctorramey.com/proud-flesh/

The Prompt: Pat on the Back–Tell someone you’re proud of just how proud you are.

My Karma Ran Over My Dogma

My Karma Ran Over My Dogma

IMG_0472

This picture was taken two sunsets ago from the porch of the beach house I’ve rented in La Manzanilla, Mexico. Not a bit of color editing has been done.

She felt the small disk glance off the steering wheel and land on her lap as they jolted over the rutted dirt road. She picked it off her leg before it was jostled off and onto the gray carpet covered with dirt, gravel and slips of paper containing quickly-scribbled lines of inspiration for future poems.  Quickly, she glanced at the words printed on its front. “My karma ran over my dogma.” What did it mean, this button she now stabbed back into the sun flap over the steering wheel of her dusty van?

She had thought it hilarious when she saw it pinned to the poetry sweater of the stranger at the reading at the L.A. coffee shop almost twenty years ago, and now here she was, driving eleven young men, one young woman and a puppet theater complete with sound system and fifty 3/4 scale puppets to a tiny village on the other side of the largest lake in Mexico.

This simple button had led her to this and now the man who wore it for every poetry reading they’d attended for 15 years was fulfilling his karma on another plane while she fulfilled her own in the life she’d planned out for him on this one. So had this entire adventure of living in Mexico simply not been part of his karma, or was karma such an intricate tapestry that it was impossible to untangle yours from that of those near and dear and even strangers met in passing?

Surely, the unbelievable interplay of serendipity was more than coincidence. Some force that is called karma by some, fate or synchronicity by others, and God, Allah or The Great Spirit by others, may be what determined who walked into your life; but it was up to you to decide whom you let walk away, whom you let stay, or whom you refused to let go.

“The school is here, Judy,” said Eduardo, as he pointed to a dull gray building much-enlivened by a huge mural no doubt painted by the students themselves. She pulled up in front of the school and  Isidro, Jose Luis, Mario, Roberto and the other young men who formed the membership of the loosely-jointed cultural council of her own small pueblo started to assist the husband and wife team who constituted the entire backup cast of the puppet theater to unload their equipment.  When their own truck had broken down enroute on the other side of the lake, villagers had told them to call the leader of this young band of artists, poets and dancers, and inevitably, she had been the one they called.  How many times had she proven to be their backup player when plans, money or a vehicle had been needed to further their plans for the cultural enrichment of their small town?

Here in this life she had fashioned to be free of the regulation of a job, applications, shows, schedules, boards of directors, groups, clubs and all of the “have to’s” of her former life, she had not resisted the charms of synchronicity and so had allowed herself to be pulled into the slow current of life in Mexico that, although it was not free of obligation–to family, friends, community–was nonetheless contingent on another sort of energy not so dependent upon schedules or clocks or calendars.  Here things happened because they happened and you were drawn into them because you were present or known or because you had been willing to be drawn in in the past and so were known to be someone open to chance and willing to play along in this great jigsaw puzzle known as Mexico.

She had planned it all out.  Her husband, sixteen years older than she, was wearing out fast, she could see. They would move to Mexico to live simply so he could retire. They found the town, bought the house, sold most of their worldly goods and packed their van. It was only then that they’d received the results for his final checkup before they hit the road.  Cancer.  He’d lived three weeks.  She dealt with what needed to be dealt with and hit the road for Mexico.  Who knows, from day to day,  whether we are part of someone else’s karma or whether they are part of ours?

The Prompt: Karma Chameleon–Reincarnation: do you believe in it?

In Safe Keeping

The Prompt: What’s the most significant secret you’ve ever kept? Did the truth ever come out?

IMG_0266
In Safe Keeping

What would be the sense of telling you my secret now
if in the past I’ve taken a very sacred vow
to never share it anywhere, with anyone at all?
Does WordPress now expect that I would seek to scale the wall
of confidentiality I’ve kept year after year?
They’re playing Devil’s advocate, but friends please have no fear.
You secret’s safe with me, for I have kept it all this time
and would not now reveal it for the price tag of a rhyme.
A secret is a secret and remains right here with me.
It is a pact between us, and forever it shall be.

Blowing Her Own Horn

The promptt: Critical Eye–Write about your blog as though you were a music critic.

IMG_7475

Blowing Her Own Horn

This blogger writes of this and that––
sometimes sharp and sometimes flat.
And though her phrasing is not stiff,
it’s usually devoid of riff.

Her instrument of choice? Her blog.
Her subjects? Modern life, her dog,
photography or 3-D art,
affairs of politics or heart.

World Music would be how I’d class it,
so when you find it, don’t just pass it.
Her themes are most original,
from Pop to Aboriginal.

Lyrics are her major thing––
meant to read instead of sing.
The critic’s lines that she most hates?
“This lady sure ain’t no Tom Waits!”

The Post: Critical Eye–Write about the subject you usually blog about as though you were a music critic.

In the Soup

DSC00068

In the Soup

Definition: in trouble, as in “I’m in the soup with the boss.”

Without fear, we’d be in traction with braces head to toe––
Each day a speed infraction from refusing to go slow.
We’d fall off tipping ladders and land upon our heads,
or go to sleep with adders sleeping in our beds.

We wouldn’t have good sense about where we should go.
I fear we would be dense––our thought processes slow.
We’d wind up in the jungle sleeping on the ground
hoping for each bungle a solution might be found.

Since fiction often follows fact, I’ve been in many a stew.
But luckily, I chose to act, so “done to” turned to “do.”
In the past I came too near to kidnapping and rape,
and luckily by conquering fear, I’d find means of escape.

After graduating college, I became a bum;
but now I can acknowledge that I was often dumb.
Fearlessness was often what got me into trouble.
My mind would choose to soften the rub of danger’s stubble.

Traveling a foreign region, I was so naive
that my mistakes were legion, so now I do believe
it’s crazy to be fearless. Now even I succumb.
In caution I am peerless––finding fearlessness is dumb!

The Prompt: Fearless Fantasies––How would your world be different if you were incapable of feeling fear?

Flopped Selfie

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Where did they go?  I think they headed south!

This poem was written during a Skype conversation with my longtime friend Marti, as I tried to describe my earlier post about my (ahem) breasts!  I started penning it and then just had to continue.  If you haven’t already, you should read the poem in the below URL first, then come back to this one!

Flopped Selfie

I did a selfie of my boobs—clad most decently.
The problem is I’m 68 and did it recently!

I only had two-dozen views—not many. Even worse,
only eleven “liked” them! Perhaps I should rehearse

the proper angle I should use, and maybe use a filter.
What’s more, I have just noticed that my right boob is off-kilter.

I’ve not the right equipment to star as fashion’s slut,
for my boobs will never measure up to Kim Kardashian’s butt!

Keeping Abreast

The Prompt: You’ve been given the power to change one rule of nature.  What would it be?

This is one of those prompts that cries out not to be taken seriously, mainly because every time we’ve tried to interfere with nature, things have turned out badly. With that in mind, I will resort to farce and hyperbole!

Keeping Abreast

If I were made the ruler of
this universe I rue and love,
the one thing I would not let “be”
is the force of gravity
in respect to just one issue.
Namely––my mammary tissue!

For, though you may feel dubious,
each year, I grow more boobious!
I do not like them hanging there
where once they used to thrust the air.
Where once each strained against its cup,
It seems like now  they’ve given up.

Listless and flat, downward they droop.
Sad Sack replaces Betty Boop.
They have no personality.
They’ve lost elasticality!
The result is truly tragic,
so this is why I need some magic.

Please, gods of nature, give a cure.
There must be some way to inure
my breasts from force of gravity.
Now that I rule, hear my plea!
Tell gravity that it is best
to loose its hold upon each breast

so they are perky once again,
thrusting out below my chin
instead of hanging in two vees
somewhere down around my knees!
Restore my pride. Dispel my frown.
I want them hanging out, not down!

Go here: https://judydykstrabrown.com/2015/12/11/flopped-selfie/ to read a poem that is an answer to the poem above–as well as the response below! (I promise, however, to end this subject here and now. No more!)

Time’s Fool

DSC00559 (1)

Time’s Fool

I’ve labored now for many years trying to make time stop,
thinking if it just would pause, that I could cross its top
and go into the future or go into the past––
passing back and forwards over timelines that are vast.

For years I used up all my time thinking about this.
I never had a child or even a first kiss.
I thought if I made time my slave, then I’d have time to do
all those wished for “one day” things I’d added to the queue:

dating, travel, games of chance, gardening and cooking––
all the things that others do while I have just been looking
for the perfect formula to take me back in time.
(Or traveling to the future would be equally sublime.)

But, for my whole life, you see,  I’ve been no place but here,
fiddling with gadgets and sitting on my rear.
In trying to trick time I fear that I’ve tricked only me,
for life itself is time travel, and the cost is free!

I do not mind the cash I’ve spent.  I don’t regret the cost.
The only thing that I regret is all the time I’ve lost!

Pick Your Gadget: time machines, anywhere doors, and invisibility helmets. You can only have one. Which of these do you choose, and why? https://dailypost.wordpress.com/prompts/pick-your-gadget/

Sugar, Sugar

IMG_8736

Sugar, Sugar––You and Me

Hey, Sugar Sugar, you’re the one for me.
I enjoy each calorie.
Smooth or frozen with chocolate on top,
washed down with a glass of pop.
Pile on the sprinkles and roll in nuts.
You’re the best, no ands or buts.
My little Sugar is smooth and dreamy.
My little Sugar chewy, creamy.

Shortbread, brownies, chocolate chip––
in my coffee, I like to dip.
But cheesecake, pie––other forms of sin––
I put on the table and dive right in.
Swim to the middle with my teeth,
see what there can be beneath
the icing or cream or chocolate sauce.
When dessert arrives, Sugar’s the boss.

Hey Sugar, Sugar, you’re the one
in snow or rain or blistering sun.
I don’t care if you’re hot or cold.
Baked Alaska is great, I’m told,
but I also like a big old cone
just piled with ice cream, all alone.
Don’t touch my Sugar, don’t you dare!!!
When it comes to Sugar, I don’t share!!!
