Snowcap Shasta Daisy: Flower of the Day, Dec 17, 2018

IMG_6559

I have no idea what this is, but I bet Bob will tell us. Gerbera? Mum? He did!!!  Bob from LWBUT (Love Will Bring Us Together) after much research, identified this as a Snowcap Shasta Daisy.  I have labeled him the “Pit Bull of Flower Identification.” Never once has he failed to identify a flower which is, as he has stated, almost impossible to do anymore because of the people who post photos they incorrectly identify.  I have probably been guilty of this myself just through a glitch in memory–similar to calling my longtime friend Gloria, Phyllis!!! And Brad, Bruce and my cat by my dog’s name.  Is it chemicals in the diet or advancing age? Perhaps Bob knows.

Courtships Gone Amiss

Courtships Gone Amiss

How the young men do persist
in their endeavors towards a tryst
and how the young girls do resist.
The young men dream and make a list
of girls most likely to be kissed,
but the outcomes all consist
of more entreaties to desist—
of “No’s” indubitably hissed.

As their crude demands are dissed,
the young men rage. They make a fist.
Some feel defeated, others pissed
at opportunities they’ve missed.
They simply do not get the gist
of what the dreams of girls consist.
A girl wants flowers, moonlight, mist,
a prom corsage around her wrist.

Wooing comes first, the girls insist.
They want their romance with a twist!

I bought this little ornament in China in 1979. Its face is silk and the rest is hand knitted and assembled. Exquisite workmanship. I bought a box of 8 or 10 of these ornaments, each different. Many I’ve given away over the years, but I have at least three left. I had purchased other wonderful little silk beaded animals when I was in Hong Kong in 1968 and still have some of those as well. I’ll be showing an ornament a day until Christmas.

Hibiscus: Flower of the Day, Dec 13, 2018

This beauty greeted me when I left my kitchen this morning. It is dinner-plate sized!  But, I spotted foam on one of the leaf joints and saw a bud that had been chewed off and was lying on a leaf below.  Sure signs of spittle bugs.  Went to town to buy habanero chilis and garlic.  Blended 1/2 cup of the habaneros and 6 cloves of garlic with two cups of water and will leave for 24 hours, then combine with dish soap and spray on the plant.  A non-toxic to the environment (other than spittle bugs) solution to these hibiscus-eaters.

My Shoes

My Shoes

My shoes go out without me. They do it all the time,
and do the things I never do. They jog. They hike. They climb.
When I wake up I find them strewn throughout the house—
one flip flop on the counter. High heels beneath my blouse
that’s flung across the table where I don’t remember putting it.
I bet they’ve been out dancing—two-stepping and high-footing it.

When my cowboy boots go riding, I’d like to go along.
I’m pretty sure, however, they think things would go wrong.
Perhaps the horse would throw me or I’d wind up getting lost.
I’m sorry that I bought them, considering the cost!
Other people are the boss of all their clothes and shoes,
but when my shoes and I face off, I am the one to lose.

I could take to going barefoot. This would work while at the beach.
Then when all my shoes are out far beyond my reach,
into the surf I’ll wade and then wander out again,
trapping sand between my toes everywhere I’ve been.
So when my shoes get home at night, they’ll be completely clueless

that I’ve left them out as well by venturing out shoeless!
