One Word Photo Challenge, Eigengrau

DSC08967DSCF1981 - Version 9

DSC09994 - Version 2

Diego is really having his 15 minutes (more like a week) of fame! This is the sixth photo of him I’ve published this week, but I promise they are all different.  It just meets this prompt so well that I had to use it. Since I have no kids to show you, guess you have to put up with my dogs!!! This is the last one for awhile. Promise. Well, actually, there will be one more in the Closeup post.In truth, it will be a rerendering and closeup of this photo.

Eigengrau is the darkest color you can actually see in the dark–a very dark gray.  Yes, I’d never heard of it, either.  Thanks, Jennifer Nichole Wells for teaching me a new word!!  Now, please teach me how to remember it!

How to Paint a Painting

This is the first essay on how to paint that has ever made me both want to paint and think I could, so I have to reblog it. Hope others agree. Judy

paint

Mix paint so it won’t flow, or so it will drip unexpectedly and in the wrong place, or will dry a different colour, or so it cludges or pools.

Choose a brush that doesn’t work, has its bristles all askew, is dried up like a stick, or is a stick, or a grass stalk, or the hair of a dog, or a clump of your own hair bound with string, or paint with the string.

Choose a canvas that has holes in it, is the skin of your lover, or the hide of your ex-lover.

Take a large garbage bag and into it discard: your concerns, your politics, the shopping list, your body, your hard-earned craft, your ego, your desires, your name.

Look at your subject (if you have one.) Stare at it a long time. Stare at it until it shimmers like illusion. Stare until it dissolves behind its…

Rainy Season

judy6 - Version 2

“Rainy Season” Mixed-Media Assemblage by Judy Dykstra-Brown 8″X5″: brass, sterling silver, pewter, iron, plastic and acrylic paint.

For fourteen years, I’ve intended to establish a website for my art, but somehow I always preferred to spend the time constructing my assemblages.  Hearing the first rainbird of the season, I was reminded of this piece and it occurred to me that I could start posting pictures of my art on this site. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll post a poem to go with it.  (A rainbird is the name for a local cicada, whose buzzsaw song always presages the rainy season.)

WordPress Weekly Photo Prompt: Afloat

DSCF1950

I love how the clouds are afloat in both the sky and the water.

That blue mass to the right of the picture is definitely a “float.” Love the little pink beach bunny, complete with matching trike.

I Happen to Have Many Hammers!

If I Had a Hammer

The Prompt: If I Had a Hammer–If you could learn a trade — say carpentry, electrical work, roofing, landscaping, plumbing, flooring, drywall — you name it — what skill(s) would you love to have in your back pocket?

I live in Mexico, where labor is cheap and where everyone needs work, so although there are many of these skills that I already have (given that I used to make lamps and had a husband who thought we should do all our repairs ourselves and never hire a handyman); I am all too happy to call a repairman for almost every job.  The exception is rewiring lamps and actually, I’ve also fixed the ice maker–twice!  As for the rest, I’m contributing to the Mexican economy.  I hire!!

Cees Fun Photo Challenge: Churches (San Miguel Church)

DSC09846 DSC09840 DSC09874
San Miguel’s church in the Plaza Principal is noted for the change of color in different light. It had a cleaning about 14 years ago and I need to try to find some of my old pictures to show the difference..

The Art of Flight

This man is a fine poet, and this is my favorite of what I’ve read over the past two years. In my estimation, a perfect poem and so I must reblog!

The Art of Flight

What wings accumulate is not air
but space, an exemplar

of restraint defied. I listen
and hear feathers

ruffling in the shadows,
a vibration that swells

until it becomes flight or
regret, the retrieval of our

bodies from this dream of ascent.
The art of flight is one of

disturbance, of angles and lift
and touching what can’t be seen.

What we hold carries no meaning.
The beauty lies in the gathering.

I’m Really Glad It’s Easter!

Just in case she isn’t in your “favorites” list, I thought you’d enjoy this rhyme about Easter excesses from my favorite NaPoWriMo writer, ogginblog.

okeating's avatarogginblog

I’m really glad it’s Easter.
I’ve had enough of Lent.
I gave up eating chocolate
But soon grew to relent.
An apple isn’t quite the same
As a giant Dairy Milk
Or Crunchie bars or Ripples
And all things of that ilk.

I’m really glad it’s Easter
And so are all my kin.
Who knew that giving chocolate up
Would free the beast within.
I’ve long run out of patience,
My fuse has grown too short.
I find I’ve started being more
Sarcastic than I ought.

I’m really glad it’s Easter.
The day has come at last
When I can end my self-inflicted
Chocky goodness fast.
I broke the fast at midnight
And now I’m rather ill.
I’ll never eat the stuff again,
(But – probably – I will!)
