“Early Morning Alarms” for Writer’s Workshop

Early Morning Alarms

First the ghoulish yowl of cat.
Then the dogs’ accompanying scat.

The far off whine of the machine
that abets the gardener’s routine.

With creak of valve and scrape of tool,
water streams into the pool.

This water surging from the jet
completes my waking up quartet.

Yolanda’s key turns in the door,
adding one harmony more.

Her music joins the morning’s set
to swell it into a quintet.

What finer way  to stir one’s head
on alternate mornings, here in bed?

For the Writer’s Workshop prompt, Alarm

Alarm Clock Rejoinder

My alarm clock’s rude awakening I eschew vis-á-vis
a gentler mode of wakeup that is buzzer-free.
Questions upon awakening I find somewhat aberrant.
Kindly save your queries until I am more coherent.
If I’m a pebble that must drop into my daily start,
I pray the ripples of my morning  come farther apart.

Prompt words today are vis-á-vis, awakening, coherent, save and ripples,

Daily Alarm

Daily Alarm

The knock outside my window is loud and most insistent—
High up in the palm tree, repeated and persistent.
It’s my daily woodpecker, knocking me awake,
way up on my mountain, far above the lake.

He comes before the sunshine kisses the same tree,
trying to be helpful by stirring lazy me.
This Braille invitation, his daily expression
told with bouncing beak tapping out a impression

in the palm tree’s trunk so high above the crew
far below the palm fronds who greet the day anew
by scraping algae from the pool or making up the bed
as another down below sorts words out in her head.

Prompt words today are sunshine, bounce, helpful, crew and expression.

6:54—Six Minutes to Spare

6:54—Six Minutes to Spare

These prompt words wag their tales at me and scamper here and there.
Each sits upon its haunches, issuing a dare.
The distance that’s between them grows vaster with each stroke
of my fingers on the keyboard. I decide to go for broke.
Nearby the clock hands tick and tock. Time edges toward the wire.
The time left for this challenge is starting to expire.
Comminatory judgment awaits me if I fail it.
I cannot face that verdict. I simply have to nail it!
I must rely on humor to help me tame this mob.
Herding words, as you must know, is such a thankless job.
But now they throng about me, tongues extended for the licking.
I’ve met the challenge, time to spare. My alarm is still ticking!

I’m still at my writing retreat, but I got up early to try to fulfill the blog prompts before our first meeting of the day. Prompt words today are vast, rely, wag, comminatory and wire.
