Chachalaca bird in Buenavista, Quintana Roo

(Posted for Judy by Forgottenman.) Judy & Xill finally arrived at their casa rental in Buenavista late last night after some issues getting their rental car for the 2-hour drive from the Tulum airport. Photo is a This  a Plain Chacalaca bird––noisiest bird in the world at least in La Manzanilla, but here they don’t seem to be making the same ruckus.

For the first 1 1/2 hours of my day, I also taught an English lesson to Carmen and Yoli, practicing my Spanish by reading a story book to them in Spanish which they translated into English. Fun. Does this qualify as a full day?

For Cellpic Sunday, a bit late…

Purse Supplies, for Cellpic Sunday

I know this is a very weird photo which is why I had to include it instead of the one I’d planned.  I read my poetry at a twice-monthly large reading at a local hotel/patio restaurant on Friday which was Halloween, and when I returned to my seat,  I noticed everyone at my table had a white stick sticking out of their mouth and then noticed  this  little sucker on the table in front of my chair. Unnoticed by me, the reader before me had delivered Halloween treats to each table, so I tucked mine into my purse with my pens. Only later when I opened the flap of my purse, did I see it nestled in with other “necessaries.” I couldn’t resist snapping a photo.

What Would We Do Without Friends?

*From my neighbor Sergio, who interprets confusing Spanish messages from my insurance company for me and

*David (peeking out the door) who along with Sergio shares his latest culinary triumphs with me via care packages sent over from next door,

*to Pepe who has been  coming by weekly for 11 or more years to give me a massage,

*to Brad and Eddie who came to cook me a delicious breakfast a few days ago,

*to my friend Blue who spent the afternoon driving me around on errands yesterday as I am carless while the insurance company holds my car hostage in Guadalajara.,

*to Doug (Forgottenman) who has been sending me links all week long (including this one) to remind me to post to them—

my past week has been filled with the blessings of favors done by friends. Bless them!!!

Quetzalcoatl Gets a Paint Job (For Cellpic Sunday)

I have been painting my “Plumed Serpent” Sculpture in the lower garden in between bursts of rain and too-hot sunny periods.  I hired someone to paint the body. I’ve been working on the head, which is still in process. I’ll do the plumed tail next. For some reason, I have identified with Quetzalcoatl since I first moved to Mexico. It is a sculpture of him that spews water into my pool and this huge sculpture winds its way across the lower lot. He was my project during the Covid isolation period. The head is of carved stone..purchased in Tonala. The tail I designed with Isidro and he carved it. The body I designed and Jose formed of concrete. I had a branding iron made to press the scales into the concrete. Once I’ve painted the head and tail, I’ll decide whether the body will stay as is or have another layer of paint added. May run out of energy by then…Forgottenman insisted wisely suggested¹ I share this “in process.”

Quetzalcoatl means “Feathered Serpent” in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. The name combines “quetzal” (brightly colored bird) and “coatl” (snake), symbolizing the deity’s dual nature, which represents a connection between the earth and the sky. Quetzalcoatl was a major deity in many Mesoamerican cultures, including the Maya and Aztec, and was believed to have a role in the creation of the world and humanity. His image as a feathered serpent reflects a blend of the divine, celestial nature of the bird, and the grounded, earthly nature of the serpent, symbolizing wisdom, life, and fertility.
(From the World History Encyclopedia)

I’m going down to do some more painting before the sun comes up. I’ll be back with a post of what this lot looked like before I started this project…..
