Sadly, my neighbor Tomas passed away in his sleep a few days ago. When his wife Dolores left yesterday to go back to the states, she brought me the containers from a meal I’d taken over to them, as well as this beautiful yellow hibiscus. It was dinner-plate sized and more gorgeous than I was able to capture, probably because it was night before I thought to take a photo and no natural light was available. R.I.P. I believe I planted this hibiscus about four months ago and this is the fourth round of blooming. It is still pretty much a single stalk which sprouts three to five blossoms at a time, with one or two coming into full bloom at a time. The strange thing about this plant, however, is that each bloom seems to have different characteristics. I probably have more than a dozen different varieties of hibiscus in my yard, but all of the others have a pretty consistent shape that each flower is a duplicate of. It’s as though this plant, however, gives me little surprises every time it blooms.

I don’t know if this hibiscus is in the act of opening up or closing down, but it makes for a novel capture. First time I’ve ever seen one do this.

I can’t bring it upon myself to kill these invaders, but my hibiscus plants pay the price. They get relocated to the spare lot. At this rate, it will be a relocation camp for caterpillars and snails! This guy was a huge one.

Click on this photo to increase the size of this photo of a wilting hibiscus flower. In its last stages, its petals resemble the delicate translucent skin of a very old woman and the faint tinge of its coloring deepens a bit. Beautiful at every stage.
