Wind, Friend and Foe for Rebecca’s Poetry Challenge

The hurricanes that cause devastation on the coast merely whip our palms, turn off electricity and knock down tree limbs, but more often, the wind is our friend. It swells our sails, keeps flags, balloons and birds aloft and furnishes the electricity that it sometimes, in its excesses, switches off again.

Hurricane or breeze,
the wind does what it pleases—
both our friend and foe.

Rebecca’s Poetry Challenge, we are to write a Haibun on the subject of wind.

Wind–For NaPoWriMo 2024, Day 14

Wind

The breath of the world blows tendrils of hair,
turns windmills and dries white sheets upon a line.
It  twists into a tornado
and lifts a house off its foundations,
sets it down in a mountain meadow
where zephyrs stir the trees.

The breath of the world blows a bee from its branch,
inhales its pollen and puffs it into nostril hairs
that launch a hurricane of sneezes,
sending a whirlwind of powder
from a powdered sugar donut out the window
onto the shoulder of a passing immaculate black tuxedo.

The breath of the world launches sailboats,
then sends them into safe harbors as it swells into a typhoon.
As it exhales, it lifts kites high into the air
and as it inhales, sends them plummeting to earth.
It fuels our lungs to blast a wind of words: expletives or adamant prayers,
anthems or a tyrant’s raves,
benedictions or cheers for a favorite football team.

Windy cities draw their nicknames
from the breath of the world.
Wind in the Willows names our books.
Woodwinds breathe out melodies.
Wind gives a name to our direction
as we struggle windward.
Hurricanes quench our thirst in airless bars.
Breezes give monikers to our dispositions.

Whirlwind, breeze, zephyr,
hurricane, gale, draft, blow,
tornado, crosswind, cyclone—
from gentle puff to wild tornado,
it is the world’s breath
that sets everything into motion.

For Day 14 of NaPoWriMo we were to write a poem making use of anaphora.

Natural Events

Natural Events

Hear the wind’s soft whistle as it explores the eaves?
What a perfect harmony each new zephyr weaves.
Each mourning wail original, each sad and keening cry
takes my heart on with it as it passes by.

All man’s detailed projects for capturing the wind
only make short use of it. Again, it will ascend
far up above all of us to what created it.
For all our petty problems, the wind cares not a whit.

The sadness we project upon the wind is ours alone,
for the wind has nothing for which it must atone.
In our attempts to harness it, as we make our demands,
we forget we’re part of nature. How have we served as its hands?

The prompt words are wind, whistle, project, original.

Blown

Blown

It whistles a soft melody, this whisper of the wind.
Sings a mysterious lullaby, seemingly without end.
We do not know its language, but know it well by Braille.
It makes a tangle of our hair and swells our vessel’s sail.
It blows into a tempest that hurls us off our course.
Where it once took us willingly, it takes us now by force.
It is that infinite mystery whose answer is unknown
until someday, perhaps, when we arrive at where we’re blown.

The prompts for today are: unknown whisper infinite  lullaby
