Men and Women

A comment from loupmojo warrants its own reposting, so those who have already seen my blog today will see it as well. It is a perfect humorous illustration of my chopped liver post!  Thanks, loupmojo.  Hilarious.

Last summer — after having driving my five speed Ford Focus for more than 100,000 miles and after having owned SEVERAL five speed automobiles and trucks in my life — I could feel the clutch was funky. I took the car into the shop and said, “The clutch isn’t right. Could you check it out?” They did not hear me AT ALL. They did not even DRIVE the car. They fixed SOMETHING ELSE for $700 and said, “The clutch is fine.” Three days later there were drips of oil where I parked my car. I HOPED they’d just done a crappy job closing the oil pan. I took the car back. I said, “It’s dripping oil. I just wanted to make sure everything was tightened up when you changed the oil.” The guy got MAD at me and started defending his workers. I said, “I’m not accusing you of anything. I’ve changed oil before and I know that what feels tight at the moment isn’t tight once everything settles in. Could you just look?” In a HUFF the guy put the car up and discovered that the master cylinder was leaking and I needed a new clutch. I’m still angry. There is a part of me that absolutely and categorically dislikes men on principle. I will take each one on an individual basis, but as a group I want nothing at all to do with them and it’s because of things like this and other little things like spousal abuse (using their comparative physical size to intimidate me) etc.

I had to read it twice before I realized what you were correcting, and I missed it the first time as well. I know, though, sometimes I’m abashed at what I’ve written and posted too quickly. I edit things days and weeks after they are posted, sometimes, and wonder who noticed the mistake and thought I didn’t know better—especially in the poetry, when the lines don’t really scan. Ah well, Martha. I think this is our punishment for all the grammar we’ve corrected over the years! Judy

Loved the clip. Having worked in engineering for a number of years, you would think I would have run into a lot of this sort of thing. There was a certain fatherly paternalism that pervaded the older generation of engineers, and I did have one nasty phase of sexual harassment, but in general, I was listened to and respected by my male peers. I also have chosen partners that respect women. I’ve never been rebuffed by a mechanic, though recently I did find that persistence by my boyfriend pushed the mechanic to find the fix for my tire pressure warning light. I was willing to let them off and just ignore the light. Anyway, I guess I’m just lucky….or pushy when it comes to making people listen to me!
