I have a friend who used to look so good in hats that her father called her “hat face.” I’ve always looked like a little old lady in hats and now that I am a little old lady, I still do. That’s why I rarely wear them. Here are some folks who do them more justice.

The blue feathers are my favourite. Nudging towards being a little old lady myself, I would have to wear a purple hat!

That blue feather hat was actually a mask he’d made at a summer camp I helped with. He’d set it up on the top of his head. He was so proud of it.

Nice pictures. Just a little historical note:
You see from old paintings that most women wore head-coverings (as per the Bible injunction in I Cor 11.) For the peasantry hair styles & coverings were fairly simple. For well-off women, and later for all, hats morphed into a fashion accessory for outings — especially for church. Hubby’s mom & mine, though poor, wouldn’t have gone to church or special outing without a hat.
Women nowadays who get regular perms and styling have pretty much abandoned hats because they not only conceal but also flatten styles. Here in Sask, even in -40 winter days, few women cover their heads.
Until about 1960 most men wore hats, but when men’s hair styling came in hats went out. Then when hair gets thin, hats come back in. And then there’s these ‘cool’ teens with their baseball caps askew — definitely a fashion accessory. 🙂

Interesting, Christine. You should post this on your blog as well! It is a post in itself. We still wore hats and gloves to church when I was young. Wonder what happened to all those hats? Landfills are probably full of them! Or they all got sent to Great Britain.

Oh, I love the name hat face, Judy. I think there’s a hat out there for everyone. It just needs to find the right head. 😀
Thanks for participating.

Actually, hat face was in one of the photos.. In the classy woven fiber hat with the “Get Your Howl On” button… at the beach. She still looks damn good in a hat!

I looked GREAT in hats. Thirty or forty years ago. Now I just look like a little old lady in a hat. Oh, wait, I AM a little old lady in a hat. Never mind.

I seldom wear hats, though I have an okay collection of them. My “goto” hat is a beret. A Basque beret. Berets seem to look good on anyone. Like a cow patty on the head. Yet, so practical and stylish at the same time. Cheers Jamie
