Today the doorbell rang and since I wasn’t expecting anyone, I called out and asked who it was before opening the gate. “Package delivery!” I signed and took the rather heavy box from the young man. I had not the foggiest idea what was inside! It felt like a heavy appliance..a printer or computer, but when I opened the box, what I found inside was 10 copies of a book I didn’t even know I’d made the final cut for. What’s more, I looked back at my letter of permission and realized that meant there was a check in the mail as well! I opened one up and sure enough, there I was on pages 125-28. Nice surprise. What was my dream recipe? Chicken soup, of course. (Actually, not a recipe at all, but rather a story about a dream that changed my life.)

Congratulations ! What a lovely surprise.

Congratulations! Surely they notified on acceptance – so yours must have gotten lost in the ether. What a lovely surprise. I hope you spend the money on something for yourself that you’ve been wanting.

They notified me that it was one of the few that made it to the final screening and asked for bio material and had me sign a final release and said what I’d be paid and that I’d receive the 10 books if my work appeared in the book, but said this didn’t mean my work would appear in the book. Like they were getting ready just in case. After that, I didn’t hear from them again until the books arrived.

Incredible. So it was like entering a contest? How did you hear about it in the first place? How long ago was it? (Inquiring minds want to know MORE – lol.)

Not a contest. Just a call for writers to submit work. They’ve done a number of these Chicken Soup books on different themes. This theme seemed to call out to me when I friend notified me about the call for submissions.

I am aware of the books (and have read a few in the years they’ve been around). How do folks find out about “calls” – Writer’s Digest?

I’m sure they’d have it, but just Googling the name would probably bring up the site. A friend sent me the link for this submissions call.

Thanks, Judy. I’m not really in that game (yet, anyway), so I know very little about how it works. I appreciate your willingness to answer these beginner questions.
