‘Trump Is Having His Own Brexit’: The Race to Prepare for a Potential U.S. Exit From the World’s Mail System

Illustration by Joe Magee for TIME
As an American, Jeanne Glenz prizes her right to vote. But, because she lives near Munich with her German husband, exercising that right isn’t always easy. This year, it could get even harder, depending on the results of an obscure international meeting scheduled to take place in Geneva on Sept. 24-25. If the Trump Administration doesn’t get what it wants at that summit, the United States is set to withdraw from an arcane treaty that governs global mail delivery—leaving commercial shippers and military mail managers fretting, and election officials concerned that millions of overseas Americans will struggle to cast a vote.

How crazy does this man have to get before everyone starts to see that the U.S. is destroying itself? If you were planning to vote from abroad, best register to do so by email. What better way to quench the vote from abroad vote?

Sorry, I’m not liking this article because I just don’t know what to say. Doesn’t this country have enough problems without opening another hornet’s nest?

I think that is what he is counting on. Bombard us with so much that we start just ignoring it. I think it is really handy that he’s choosing to do this before the elections with so many voters living abroad –many of them voting by mail. Perhaps a coincidence, but….

That’s the thought that came to my mind when I read it.

There should be a way to get election ballots here regardless of any other issue. It can’t be right to disenfranchise citizens abroad.
I can see the unfairness of the rates though. Why should we subsidize China?

The thing is that most Americans DON’T support that nut. Do you think he pays any more attention to the wishes of the voters than he does anything else? Nope. We’re merely annoyances who (apparently) tweet ‘false news’ about his level of insanity. The guy is bat sh*t crazy. Anyone who doesn’t know that is pretty nuts themselves, in my opinion.

This is the first I’ve heard of this one — it bears watching closely. In a country made up of immigrants, there are not many who don’t use international mail service. I didn’t realize that is also governed by international treaties. Yes, perhaps the rates need resetting, but destruction is not the best way to effect change! Yikes! Judy, where do you find such obscure pieces of news?

This one has made me so angry that I have sent a message to Harley Rouda, my Congressman, asking that he investigate motivation and consequences and add his findings to the Impeachment inquiry (I believe it’s too late to prevent any action at this point).

I hope it’s just one of his threats, to be pulled at the last minute with a denial that he ever said it!

My son lives in China. I find this extremely disturbing and pretty loco. The US mail is the most reasonable way to send stuff to him now. Interestingly, even though technically it is possible to pay less we’ve never figured out how he can take advantage of mailing home on the cheap, he uses UPS. Seems a pity to upset a good system for no measurable gain.

How surprising that he would make a decision that makes no sense at all.

At this rate soon he will undo the revolutionary war. Until he finds out that it does not automatically make him colonial governor…
