An Open Letter to the N.Y. Times Regarding Their Sunday Crossword
Your circular riddle’s an impossible pill
to swallow. Your blanks I struggle to fill.
The crux of the matter? I never know
just how to harvest the seeds that you sow.
I find your clues exceedingly queer.
Your genius outreaches my talent, I fear.
Prompt words today are circular, riddle, outreach and crux. I’m also answering the dVerse Poet’s Quadrille Challenge making use of the word fill in a 44-word poem.
Here’s the dVerse prompt: https://dversepoets.com/2020/02/10/quadrille-97-filling-the-page/
I don’t even try, and I might have as many puzzle books in my bedroom as books.

Actually, the Saturday crossword is harder, but I only had a book of the Sunday crosswords to photograph. I now blog instead of doing crosswords. They used to be a compulsion with my entire family, though. Everyone tried to be the first to grab the newspaper. Otherwise, it was just filling in the blanks earlier family members couldn’t fill in.

Hook ’em with the title, I always say. You’re good at doing the same with the first line.

I used to love them but no longer have the time to do them.

This made me smile. And I’m always impressed by people who can do a rhyme and rhythm scheme with the 44 words.

That’s what I do instead of NY Times Crossword puzzles! I admit I had to do some squeezing and condensing.

The New Yorker is even worse. Or maybe it’s me. I used to be able to do these things.

Love it, right from the title on.
Their genius always outreaches my talent. But it’s a good mental exercise.

That last line explains my inability to do crossword puzzles.

I liked the cryptic ones where the solution was more a matter of wit than knowledge.
