Clearing The Deck

What does one do when they wake up at 5 AM after 4 1/2 hours of sleep and can’t get back to sleep again? Too lazy to go out and do more exercises in my pool, I decided to clear off my computer desktop which has once again become completely covered.  In doing so, I found these favorite photos which over the past few weeks I have discovered in other places and put on the desktop in case I need them. Here they are, given a purpose, so I can again stash them away.

If you have questions about the photos, ask, and If you decide to do the same, send me a link!!!

Scrabble Quibbles for RDP Jan 27, 2025

Scrabble Quibbles

Scrabble Quibbles

I move the tiles back and forth but still I cannot lick
the secret to which words may be made from my weird pick.
I cannot spell “memorial” without another “m,”
so instead I settle and simply spell out “rim.”
Before too long I find another perfect word to make,
but, alas, I do not have the “u” to spell out quake.
I spy the final “u” when my opponent shifts her rack,
and so I skip my turn to return some letters back.
And this segment of the story will prove I was to blame
when my sister drew the “q” and spelled out “quick” to win the game!

Note: the photo of the Scrabble board is of a real game, although not the one described in the poem. The reason I took the photo is because of the very unlikely occurrence of the word “urinate” showing up twice on the same board. What are the chances of not only having the right tiles to spell the same 7 letter word twice but also finding a place to play them?

The prompt for RDP Monday is Quibble

“Shore Leave” for The Sunday Whirl # 691, Jan 26, 2025

Shore Leave

Calm cliffs rise up from beastly seas to soothe a sailor’s mind,
and rolling hills make memories of a different kind.

Though blades of grass may mimic the sway of restless swells,
more timid winds shake music from a string of tiny bells
woven through the tree limbs and stroke music from thin bars
sticking up out of  the earth, topped off by tiny jars
that lips of breezes play like flutes to create harmony
under the stars that sets the hearts of land-bound sailors free.
These scenes that meet their gazes dispel dark memories
of months of troubled dreaming on tempest-tossed wild seas

Painting by Juan Antonio Pérez Ayala

For The Sunday Whirl Wordle 691  today’s words to use are: bell mimic blade gaze hills jar soothe mind stars timid beastly sea

Making up Words, for Sunday Confessionals, Jan 26, 2025

Trump-headedness is my made-up word and the definition is: A mental condition during which one spouts facts contrary to the truth in order to further one’s own welfare, ego or pocketbook.

For Sunday Confessionals, we were asked to create a new word for the dictionary.

Unplanned Stop, for Cellpic Sunday, Jan 26, 2025

We were about 5 minutes out of La Manzanilla on the twisty two lane road to Melaque when we started hearing something dragging on the undercarriage of the car.  Irritated drivers piled up behind us as I slowed the car to a speed which minimized the scraping sound. Eventually, I found a small turnoff and pulled off the road. Cars zipped by us as Isidro got down on his hands and knees and eventually his stomach to try to figure out what piece of my car seemed determined to desert us. Moving around the car, he finally located the problem in the same locale that had started the problem the last time I drove to La Manzanilla a year ago that resulted in the entire protective shield for the undercarriage separating and falling off on the road.

Since we knew there was no garage in La Manzanilla, we continued on our way. I drove slowly, acquiring another sizable entourage behind us before finally reaching Melaque, where we spotted this small radiator/muffler repair shop by the side of the road. Although they had no car lift, they quickly pulled two small metal lift tracks and drove the car up onto them. We moved to the shade of the garage to inspect their organization and observe the forging of a piece for the job they’d been working on before our arrival by one of the three men in the shop as the other two collaborated  to have us on the road again in 15 minutes or so.  The cost? Five dollars!! I gave them a 50 percent tip and we were off with a warning that this was a temporary fix.

It is still serving me well 5 days later, but composing this cellpic feature has reminded me that I must make an appointment on Monday to have it checked out.
