Empty Pockets at Fifty
Empty Pockets at Fifty
My pockets are turned inside out.
No riches do I have to flout.
This state of my intimidation
is perhaps an apt reflection
of my early hesitation
to obtain an education.
Perhaps if I had done my math,
I’d have pursued a richer path!
For the dVerse Poets prompt, we are to write a Quadrille (44-word-poem) on the word, “Pocket.” Strangely enough, I found a poem I wrote to that prompt 5 years ago and coincidentally, it is 44 words long, so I had to repeat it here. I’ve written nearly 5,000 poems over the past 13 years…I’m taking the license to repeat some of them.

Who knows, maybe if…

Oh, the regret! Better late than never? I like this snappy 44, Judy!

Luckily, it is fiction and not really reflective of my experience, as you can see below in my comment to Ana.

University would have bashed all 5000 of your lovely poems right out of you still unborn, and tossed them on the rubbish heap in favor of the disjointed nonsense you would have learned to write for them in order not to get a failing grade. Be glad you stayed out.

Actually, this poetry does not really reflect me, but an imaginary character. I did get my masters degree and had wonderful writing professors who did much to encourage me. Mia culpa, Ana!

Well, your lyric poetry survived it beautifully, I must say! Where did you go to school, to meet such unusually enlightened intelligence, if I may ask?

Your pocket may be empty but you’re rich with poetry, Judy! 🙂

Clever and wonderfully written, Judy! The humor and regret work beautifully together, but I’d say nearly 5,000 poems make you incredibly rich in creativity and experience even if the pockets occasionally disagree. 😊✍️❤️

Lovely poem. Riches are not always in cash or gold.
