Welcome to “The Numbers Game #39”. Today’s number is 161. To play along, go to your photos file and type that number into the search bar. Then post a selection of the photos you find under that number and include a link to your blog in my Numbers Game blog of the day. If instead of numbers, you have changed the identifiers of all your photos into words, pick a word or words to use instead, and show us a variety of photos that contain that word in the title.

This prompt will repeat each Monday with a new number. If you want to play along, please put a link to your blog in comments below. Below are my contributions to the album:

If you are wondering about the 6th photo, It was taken at the mummy museum in Guanajuato. This display was actually set up for this purpose. So macabre, but Ryan got in the spirit. Note the difference in size between the coffins of that day and ones necessary to accommodate the giants of today.

for Sunday Whirl Wordle, Sept 22, 2024

Escape

Quiver me timbers and shiver me limbs.
The once yellow sun first scatters, then dims.
Hearts twirl in the darkness beneath a faint moon.
Three long howls in the night–are they canine or loon?
My heart, nearly broken, deserves a respite,
so, unwilling to  face  the moon at its height,
I pick up my bags and streak into the night.

For the Sunday Whirl Wordle the words are: quivers limbs scattered yellow twirl hearts streak faint bags three howls long

Balloon Plant, for FOTD Sept 21, 2024

I saw this small tree at a local outside restaurant and had to look it up.  It is a balloon plant, asclepias physocarpa. It is a relative of milkweed, which explains the monarch butterflies we saw floating over the pool in front of these trees.  Yves, the owner of the restaurant, who always likes to stop and sit and chat a bit, called in the man who stands in front of the restaurant, offering to wash cars, and he picked two of the pods off the trees, saying we could dry them and plant the seeds  and also gave me two small trees in coffee cans, which I of course paid him for.  When I got home, I looked the plant up, thinking it might be a relative of Chinese lanterns, which are orange, but in a similar inflated shape. I can’t find any evidence that they are but did find out the sticky white sap they exude is mildly poisonous. It reminds me of the caustic sap of crown of thorns, so I was not surprised to hear this.  Now I have to decide where to plant it. Perhaps outside the window in front of my desk so I can see if it does attract monarchs.

During further research, I discovered that other names for this plant are hairy balls plant and bishop’s balls!

Fool Me Once, 3 Things Challenge, Sept 20, 2024

Fool me once

Deceive me once, and be assured,
the likelihood is thin
that you’ll ever have the chance
to lie to me again!

For the Three Things Challenge, the words are: ASSURE,
LIE, DECEIVE Image from Unsplash.

Dove of Peace for SOCS

Dove of Peace

To sort out the truth from the snarl of worldly acts—
to distill all that we’ve heard into proven facts
is often impossible. How can we bear the truthfulness
of acts which all too often are heartbreaking  in their ruthfulness?
How can we search for truth in what we cannot bear to ponder?
See the blood upon the hands they’ve taken care to launder?
Oh world, I do not want to hold thee close enough.
To do so is too painful, too exceptionally rough.
I cannot take your violence, your heedlessness and gall.
I do not see your fairness or your mercy, over all.
If only of our warring thoughts, we could select the fonder
and find a happier world out there–waiting over yonder.
Many seek this place but we do not know how to find it.
The kernel of the truth’s in all, but how are we to grind it?
In determining the answer, we all must share a part,
and the place where we might find it best is deep within the heart.

For SOCS the prompt is peace/piece
