Portraits, for Cellpic Sunday

The last one was unplanned. Couldn’t resist including it. It was taken by mistake as I stood in front of a sculpture bearing antlers at my friend’s house in Wyoming. The rest were all taken this week.

Ragtag saved saved the day! I had been looking through 2 weeks of photographs and culled out my favorites, but had no idea where I’d use them and they were cluttering up my desktop. Then, as if by magic, I saw that the prompt today was “Photograph.” Although there was no “s” on the end of it, I decided to improvise, so here they are. Thanks, Ragtag. They were mostly taken in the jardin in San Juan Cosala during an arts/crafts sale and kids art experience, at the beach and in my yard.  A couple are from my pinata party before Xmas. If I can find it, I’ll publish a link to a story I wrote about the lady in the shawl over 20 years ago. She has since moved from her house on the beach to her daughter’s house at the entrance to the Raquet Club. What is Morrie looking at in the 21st photo? Look at # 22 to see. Okay, time to go clear off my computer desktop! I won’t reveal the condition of my real desktop–as in furniture. Okay, I lied. Here it is:

Would someone send me a  prompt to deal with it?

For RDP, the prompt is Photograph.

Unplanned Stop, for Cellpic Sunday, Jan 26, 2025

We were about 5 minutes out of La Manzanilla on the twisty two lane road to Melaque when we started hearing something dragging on the undercarriage of the car.  Irritated drivers piled up behind us as I slowed the car to a speed which minimized the scraping sound. Eventually, I found a small turnoff and pulled off the road. Cars zipped by us as Isidro got down on his hands and knees and eventually his stomach to try to figure out what piece of my car seemed determined to desert us. Moving around the car, he finally located the problem in the same locale that had started the problem the last time I drove to La Manzanilla a year ago that resulted in the entire protective shield for the undercarriage separating and falling off on the road.

Since we knew there was no garage in La Manzanilla, we continued on our way. I drove slowly, acquiring another sizable entourage behind us before finally reaching Melaque, where we spotted this small radiator/muffler repair shop by the side of the road. Although they had no car lift, they quickly pulled two small metal lift tracks and drove the car up onto them. We moved to the shade of the garage to inspect their organization and observe the forging of a piece for the job they’d been working on before our arrival by one of the three men in the shop as the other two collaborated  to have us on the road again in 15 minutes or so.  The cost? Five dollars!! I gave them a 50 percent tip and we were off with a warning that this was a temporary fix.

It is still serving me well 5 days later, but composing this cellpic feature has reminded me that I must make an appointment on Monday to have it checked out.

For Cellpic Sunday

That’s my friend Christine Anfossie singing at a local beach venue.  The little boys worked for hours to dig a big box in the beach, then to build three rounded chairs in it  to sit in so they could observe the sardines they collected in buckets along with sea water to fill it.  Their own aquarium. I asked if they were going to eat them and they said no, just watch them.

This colony of tiny ants shown in the first photo has taken up residence below the flowerpot holding my Washingtonian Palm. When I water, they come swarming out from beneath and swarm up the sides, carrying their eggs.

Breaking Piñatas, for Cellpic Sunday, Dec 22, 2024

Finally, the guests started arriving. Santiago got here first so I gave him some rubber duckies to float in the hot tub. His folks were both near by so no danger. Isidro’s six grandchildren rushed in and surrounded me with hugs and kisses..unprompted! Even the boys. They are such sweet children. Then Yolanda and Yoli and Oscar and Isidro were close behind, lugging a big aluminum pot full of Yolanda’s traditional posada chicken salad to be eaten on tortillas as well as a huge thermos of fruit punch and another of jamaica. We did the piñata first, starting with the tiniest and going uphill to the tallest–and as it turned out, the strongest. Yoli was the heroine who whacked Santa his final blow. Luckily, I think his cute face is salvageable so I can use it on a wall or door next year.Below are all my cellpics of the event. It was sooooo enjoyable and the kids were so excited and all the young adult parents and cousins and brothers and sisters were so fun as well. The kids had as much fun playing hide and seek in my garden and all around the outside of my house..and the inside, actually…as they did whacking the piñata. Here are some pics:

The children were so active, running through the house and out four different doors of the house..in backyard and front yard and yet they were careful, damaged nothing. At one point one of Isidro’s granddaughters saw me pick up a candy bar wrapper from the grass and minutes later went over to kids and told them not to throw anything on the ground and to put the candy wrappers in their hands into the wastepaper basket. She was a very small girl and I thought this was  an incredibly  thoughtful act. In fact there was no trash around at all. Amazing given the hundreds of pieces of wrapped  candy that were being consumed. .Yolanda and Yoli and Ellie and Marie Jose cleared the tables and all the trash, even though I did not ask or expect them to. All in all, a wonderful wonderful experience.  The mother of most of Isidro’s grandkids who attended was only about 7 when I first met her. She won a “clean up the lake” poster contest I sponsored. And Alejandra, the mother of two others, attended a kids camp I helped organize and conduct when she was 12 years old. She’s now 27! It’s amazing to live through an entire generation of kids. I’ve been here 23 years. Longest I’ve ever lived anywhere.
