The Red High Heels, For Writing Prompts, Jan 14, 2026

The Red High Heels

When I saw them in the store,
one half classy and one half whore,
the Crocs I had on seemed a bore.
Those heels were strappy, cut low, red.
I knew those heels would knock men dead.

As I left the store in them,
I was feeling oh so femme
until one shoe caught on my hem.
‘Twas then that I went tumbling down,
wrenched my ankle and tore my gown.

This fall was just a quirk, I thought,
with no regrets for what I’d bought,
for I was feeling oh so hot
that men would surely all be gawking.
I’d be more careful with my walking.

In Mexico, young girls or crones
go tripping over cobblestones
with no risk to their ankle bones.
Moving with sure-footed grace,
they never fall upon their face.

They chat as they cross streets together
even in inclement weather––
Their four-inch heels of strappy leather
negotiate each slippery rock,
barely noticing where they walk.

So I just got up from the floor
and sauntered once more towards the door
onto the street outside the store.
Where, once I got into the swing
I knew those shoes were just the thing.

My car was just one block away
but it was such a lovely day,
I thought that I would just sashay
up to the plaza for lunch and booze––
a trial run for my new shoes!

I belted up my dress a bit
so I would not trip over it.
Once more I felt sexy and fit
as I accomplished no small feat
negotiating each walk and street.

I must admit that I felt hobbled
as I walked over roadways cobbled.
Perhaps I grimaced, winced and wobbled.
But at the time, I was enthused––
thinking only of my new shoes.

When I reached the plaza and I walked by
a table of men, I felt each eye
peruse my legs from toe to thigh.
I knew that those new shoes were why
I held the gaze of every guy.

Maneuvering towards an empty table,
I walked as well as I was able,
but overlooked just one small cable
as I glanced over for their reaction.
That’s how I ended up in traction!

I Used to Eat Red, for dVerse Poets

I Used to Eat Reddaily life color108 (1)My sister Patti and I, posed by my older sister Betty.  Those are “the” cherry trees behind us. The fact that we were wearing dresses suggests we were just home from Sunday school and church, our souls bleached as white as our shoes and socks!

I used to eat red

from backyard cherry trees,
weave yellow dandelions
into cowgirl ropes
to lariat my Cheyenne uncle.

I once watched dull writhing gold
snatched from a haystack by its tail,
held by a work boot
and stilled by the pitchfork of my dad
who cut me rattles while I didn’t watch.

I felt white muslin bleached into my soul
on Sunday mornings in a hard rear pew,
God in my pinafore pocket
with a picture of Jesus
won from memorizing psalms.

But it was black I heard at midnight from my upstairs window––
the low of cattle from the stock pens

on the other side of town––
the long and lonely whine of diesels on the road
to the furthest countries of my mind.

Where I would walk
burnt sienna pathways
to hear green birds sing a jungle song,
gray gulls call an ocean song,
peacocks cry the moon

until I woke to shade-sliced yellow,
mourning doves still crooning midnight songs of Persia
as I heard morning
whistled from a meadowlark
half a block away.

And then,
my white soul in my shorts pocket,
plunging down the stairs to my backyard,
I used to eat red,
pick dandelions yellow.

For Becky’s Squares Red Challenge

Today I went for my second doctor’s appointment in Peoria and when my doctor and his nurse had left the room, they said for me to remain and a social worker came in to interview me to make sure I was not in duress, or being bothered by anyone…first time this had ever happened. But as she interviewed me, I became hypnotised by this pattern on the garment that covered her right knee.  With my
macular degeneration, the circular lines seemed to be spinning around in a spiral.

She was a colorful figure both in appearance and personality and we had a nice conversation in spite of the fact I had no need for a social worker.  She gave me permission to publish her pictures. Here is the rest of her.  A lovely lady.

For Becky’s Square Challenge the prompt was Red.  This photo just seemed to be predestined to appear in it.

Just for the fun of it, I decided to leave the captions on the photos. Some will make sense, some won’t as they are all from former posts. For CFFC, RED!!!

Red

Obviously, a good time was had by all. It started when I drove into San Juan Cosala to see the sunset but stopped to drop off some Old Dames books at Viva Mexico. Next thing I knew, I was sitting at the table with the musicians sipping a gin and tonic. Then, when they played a Mexican version of “I Did it My Way,” the lady in red had to come up and say it was originally a song written  and recorded to the tune of an old French song by Paul Anka, who was a Canadian. Of course I had to say Frank Sinatra recorded it. They begged to differ. The next thing I knew, we were all standing up singing our own version simultaneously, in English, French and Spanish.  It ended up with us all in tears, hugging each other and the two women saying it was the best time they’d ever had visiting Mexico.  And, by the way, I was right. Paul Anka refused to record the song, saying he’d written it for Frank. She was also right, however, because he did use the tune to an old French song but wrote different words to it in English. I also read that Frank Sinatra hated the song because he thought it was self-aggrandizing.

Oh, by the way. I missed the sunset.

I’m not responsible for the additional red rings around the lights. I guess my camera just anticipated this prompt.

Literally Brick Red!!

Forgottenman has access as an administrator on my blog. As I slept, he was obsessively busy trying to find legitimate brick red in my photos file. This is what he came up with: Thanks, Dux, for keeping me literal.
