Although this is a picture of my childhood friend and me, it is used for illustrative purposes only. The poem is fictional and in no way describes either one of us.

Fidelity

“We’ve been friends since we were skinny!”
–Anonymous

Yes, we grew up friends and stood up at each others’ weddings.
She was there for all my break-ups. I was there for all her beddings.
And though she thinks I’m poorly dressed and I think she’s a snob
who only talks about her “things,” fashion and her job.
And though she lets her eyes stray, like she finds my talk is boring,
and puts polish on her fingernails  while mine are apple coring.

Though she prefers the opera while I like the Avett Brothers,
and dines on caviar while Burger King is more my druthers.
While she shops for Michael Kors, Yves Saint Laurent and Fendi,
Ross Dress for Less is where I shop for clothes that are less trendy.
She drives a new Mercedes while I drive a beat-up Chevy.
While she works out at her health spa, I have let myself get heavy.

Yet none of this has ever put our friendship in the skids.
I pat her little yappy dog. She puts up with my kids.
For though we’ve evolved differently,  she still is my best friend,
and the history between us means our bond will never end.
Though she lives in a mansion and my house is a dump,
Just one thing could divide us. That is–if she votes for Trump!!!

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Delayed Contact.” How would you get along with your sibling(s), parent(s), or any other person you’ve known for a long time — if you only met them for the first time today?

The 511

I love Anita’s quirky little tale, so I’m sharing it with you, just in case you haven’t already read it!

animar64's avatarANITA'S OWL CREEK BRIDGE

They were two ladies- about the same age with the same style of curly and both had the same type of phone and both were riding the bus to work on what would turn out to be a very hot summer day.

The woman who sat close to the window looked over to her seatmate and smiled and said:

” I really like this phone, don’t you?”

Her seatmate looked up from her phone ( they had the same models ) and down into the hands of the woman who sat close to the window and she saw ” Proverbs” and lots of writing under the bold print.

The woman smiled. Her eyes were dark, her smile was darker and her voice was as cool and refreshing as first breath of Spring.” I love it. You can find anything you need to know on this, “

The woman near the window looked down and…

Charm School for Cinderella

Stir the pot round and round
until no essence can be found
of division between root and seed
between your wishes and the deed
that brought you here to my woods abode
for me to birth and coax and goad
fate to give you what you wish–
Prince Charming on a golden dish.

Throw this leaf to spin and bubble.
It removes your courting trouble.
Stir in this bleeding heart and mold
to wrest affection from the cold.
Now stir three times with unfaltering arm.
One time, two times, three time’s the charm!
And lest you find these arts disarming,
remember, the result is Charming!

Do I Really Want to Be Alone????

Do I Really Want to Be Alone????
Here is a fun prompt from Quantum Hermit.  They’ve asked us to go to our playlist and to go to the song number than equals our age and report what it is.

Mine turned out to be “Leave Me Alone” by Blind Dog Smokin’.  I don’t quite know what to make of that! (You won’t find it on You Tube.  It is definitely not the song by the same name sung by Snoop (Dogg) Lion!!! Also not the one by Michael Jackson.  Can’t find it any place but my play list!

Pragmatic Faith

Coins cast in a fountain with wishes voiced above–
requests for fame or money, beauty, health or love.
Do those who make the wishes have faith they will come true?
If so, what difference from the prayer whispered from a  pew?

Twenty years thereafter, what wishes still remain?
Do we again repeat these things that we’ve wished in vain?
Do we still have faith in magical solutions
via coins subjected to watery ablutions?

Fantasy may have its place in fairy tales and dreams,
but it rarely helps us to achieve life’s major schemes.
Santa Claus and fairies, the Easter Bunny, elves?
Far better that we base our faith mainly in ourselves.

Still Don’t Know the Name of This Flower! Cee’s Flower of the Day, Aug. 10, 20

IMG_3536I am still trying to remember the name of this flower.  I have a paler variety at home but these beauties are in bloom on the Lake Chapala Society grounds. I love the seed pods as well, so I’m showing one above.  They burst open and spill out the black bee bee seeds, insuring a new generation of plants.

Mexican Cobblestones (For Michael)

                                  Mexican Cobblestones (For Michael)

Michael Lai has said he would like to see the cobblestones in Mexico.  Every town and sometimes every street is different.  After a huge mud, stone and water slide in 2007, we lost most of our cobblestones and they were replaced with the compound cobblestone/concrete roads pictured below. The streets in the nearby little towns are much more irregular than this and the stones are usually just placed in sand.  At any rate, here are three pictures of the two roads that pass my house, which is on a corner. IMG_3523 (1) IMG_3521 IMG_3518Not as pretty, pristine or regular as the stone pavers in Croatia that you photographed, Michael!

If you are interested in the devastation caused by the huge land, mud and water slides in the Raquet Club where I live, go here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/shmiller/sets/72157601993828026/  The house with the car going through the window and all the boulders and wood piled up in front of it  is two houses away from me and the street with all the huge boulders is the main street I drive up to get to my house.  It is also one block away from my house.  The second and third pictures of mine above are the street that leads up to it. You can see it just one block away! The present streets are some contrast to the terrible damage inflicted by the slide.

If anyone else is interested in the photos of the beautiful stone Croatian streets that Michael posted, you can find them here: https://retireediary.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/dscf0496.jpg
