Tiny Nosegay: Flower of the Day, Oct 13, 2018

This is a macro of a nosegay so tiny that it was impossible to see the intricacy of the flowers until I blew up the macro.  So pretty and totally overlooked as individual flowers without this boost. It was a tiny centerpiece on my friend Patty’s dinner table. The entire bunch was about two inches across and the flowers about a half inch wide.

Below is a photo of the table with the flower cluster above  seen on the green striped mat in the center of the table.  There are actually two clusters of the flower in that tiny vase.  I’m showing this so you can see the flowers to scale with the other objects on the table as the flowers above are enlarged greatly.

    Thank you for the explanatory comment… i was feeling confused because i was sure the flowers were Crassula but the leaves looked all wrong!? I thought it was growing in your garden as they are flowering succulents.

    Did you notice the 3 different flowers in one bunch? – 4, 5 and 6 petal/ovules?

      I knew it would be confusing. Stranger still is that viewed with the naked eye, they looked red, and like they were dried up. Only with magnification did you see them like this. I should have taken a photo from further away as well. I’ll have to search other photos and see if I captured them. No I hadn’t noticed that there were three different flowers..They were all attached to the cluster. I’ll have another look. Thanks, Bob. (Addendum: Very strange. Have you ever noticed that in any other flower—that different flowers in the cluster have a different number of petals and ovules? That was very discerning of you.

        Bob..I’ve added a third photo so you can see the actual size of the flower cluster alongside other objects that will show its size by comparison. Have another look. Judy

        I have two types of crassula – huge bushes and a low runner – both display different petals on the same plant.Also the runner has the 4 leaves predominant, the bushes 5!

        I think i remember seeing another plant that does it but it does not immediately spring to mind. 🙂

        I have posted my crassula on my blog a few years ago showing the differences clearly which was why i picked up on your pics. 😉

    OK – that took about 30 seconds to find – and i needed to expand it first! 😉

    I’m not sure, but those might be a bit smaller than my flowers ( but exactly the same form) mine are generally each half an inch across? A bunch might have a dozen or so?
