It’s an exquisite loss, your going away,
and it’s also timely, I’m given to say.
You may find it inane that I’m saved while you’re lost,
but it’s true that some friendships come at a cost.
You’ve departed, it’s clear. This I so plainly see,
but your leaving has given me something back: me!

I love the term ‘exquisite loss!’ It’s not often that we view such losses as exquisite, though in most cases they turn out to be just that, and for the reason your poem suggests!

Oh yes, there’s definitely a connection between your poem and my current situation – although my son wouldn’t have left if I hadn’t thrown him out and got a restraining order.

Someone close to me is going through exactly the same process. Letting someone determined to destroy himself bring you down with him doesn’t help either one of you.
