If only we could use the money being used to move these kids around and play mean with them to better their lives in their home countries, the problem would be solved. Problem is that if we sent money, it would never get where it needs to go. Beau is justifiably angry, aw we should all be — but what to do about it? ~ ~

You are right. The problem that needs fixing — ultimately — are the conditions from which these people are fleeing. We have not been able to do that successfully at any point in the past and I’m not convinced we will ever succeed. But as long as there are countries killing off their own citizens by the thousands, there will be refugees desperate enough to try to get away — at ANY price. I don’t think we should be making the price this high. I think we are showing an outrageous lack of compassion — but there IS a problem and we can’t be the only country to solve it. It’s too big for us alone.

I agree that we may never succeed in solving the problems of the countries to our south. I also agree that we can’t be the only country to solve the problem. Unfortunately that leaves with an ongoing problem that needs, at the very least, more compassion and assistance than we are currently providing!

Surely there is some unpopulated region where they could set up cities similar to what the refugees from the Shining Path guerillas set up near Lima, Peru. They are an excellent example of how people can set up thriving self-supporting communities on otherwise undesirable land. I’ve done a blog on these communities, I believe.
