The Dangers of Early Halloween Shopping
Well, just a few more weeks before those little Halloweeners will be flooding through the gates of the Raquet Club. There are more every year and a few years ago we started all contributing candy and making up bags for each trick or treater and handing them out at the gate to the club. So, I made my trip to Walmart and bought 7 big bags of miniature Snicker bars and suckers, as well as a bag of chocolate chips so I could make cookies for my neighbors who are always bringing me shares of their suppers. I then made the mistake of bringing the Halloween candy into my house.
Instead of baking cookies, I took a little nap, but awakened to that candy calling my name. I resisted for about 15 minutes before I tore a corner off one of the Snickers bags and had a single miniature Snickers bar––about one inch square. I sealed up the bag. Tried to take my mind off it. Then felt suddenly thirsty and on my way to the water jug, had to pass very close to the chair the shopping bag holding all the candy was on. The bag that had been opened seemed to be saying something to me, so I leaned closer. “Eat me!” Shades of Alice in Wonderland. I opened the bag and had just one more tiny piece of chocolate, caramel and peanuts before I called my next door neighbor and asked if I could bring the rest of the candy over to his house until it was time to take it down to the clubhouse to pack up the bags.
After he stopped laughing, he admitted it wouldn’t be much safer at his house. “You would eat my candy?” I queried. Shocked.
Well, no, he admitted. Probably not. Were there Andes mint bars involved, he asked? No way. I don’t believe in mixing mint with anything but chewing gum. So he agreed and we met in the street outside our houses for the hand-over.
So, end of story until this Skype exchange between ForgottenMan and me. By the way, the chocolate chips were still unopened in the cupboard. Cookies still unbaked at the time of this interchange a few minutes ago. The comments to the right are mine.
Forgottenman says I “might wanna” explain that an r&c is a rum and coke and g&t is a gin and tonic. I think he’s underestimating my audience!! And thus go our evenings!! Somewhere I’m sure people are discussing great thoughts. Not so this evening with us.

Welp, I see I’ve been outed as a drunken peanut/cashew eater. I suppose I can bear that burden.

And I thought I was the only person who can’t buy H’ween candy until H’ween Day! That’s actually a part of why I hide from H’ween!

I wish we lived closer, Janet. You make me feel better about myself when you admit we share a few vices.

Shall I air Forgottenman’s dirty little secret? He buys bags of Reeses candy bars, then turns out the lights and pulls the shades on Halloween and eats them all himself. The photo I used in this post was actually taken last year at his house when I broke precedent and actually handed them out to Trick or Treaters.

I agree, if you have them at home, you are going to be tempted, BIG TIME!

A fun exchange. We are fortunate to have no passing children 🙂

I love Halloween. It’s what I looked forward to most after years in Australia and Ethiopia..and what I look forward to when I go to the states.

OK, since we’re confessing…I bought two big bags of Reese’s Pieces last Sunday when we arrived back in Arizona to put in the candy fish in our great room because the colors match our decor. As of today, one bag is gone, not much is left of the second and we haven’t had any company! The inner child wins again.

I saw a bit of a video on Kylie Jenner showing off her office (shudder.) Her main accent color was pink and she pointed out a big crystal bowl of pink M&M’s. Each one had her face on it!!! Shades of decorating with candy..

I love Reeses cups and I can’t have anything around like that either. I keep chocolate chips in the freezer for the kids. But a gin and tonic is so funny you should mention that. Last night I had a dream I had one, sadly only a dream.

Dear Judy, Such a fun post and something everyone can relate to. I always hear chocolate speaking. But, I am destined to smell brownies and not have any. A friend I stayed with (after my husband passed away) would make brownies to bring to people at her job. The first time she did this, I was relishing the oh- so- intoxicating odor and dreaming of when I would take the first bite and taste it on my tongue. Ended up that she told me that they all were for the people at work! She continued this practice throughout the year I stayed with her. I dared not make a batch of brownies myself because when it comes to brownies I have no willpower. I just recently got a new roommate. She seems very nice and we have been getting on well. Last week I came home and smelled the aroma of baking brownies. I was so excited. But, it turns out that my new roommate does not share her food, despite my having given her an excellent crumb cake piece the week before! She even ate one right in front of me! I was flabbergasted!
Anyway, I thought I would share my funny plight with you as a thank you for all your posts that have given me pleasure or a laugh.

Unbelievalbe. Are you contemplating getting a new roommate? Both of these sound like duds. If I lived in the U.S. I would send you a brownie!!!!

I am seriously considering that! Ha! My previous roommate turned out to be a malignant narcissist direct from hell! So far, this one is pleasant aside from a penchant for brownie hoarding. I would just have stolen one but I was afraid that she might have counted them! LOL! And, I do believe that if you lived in the U.S., you would send me a brownie!

Make a big pan of them and offer one to her. See what happens.
