Paloverde: Sunday Trees, June 29, 2017

IMG_0452

My sister sent me this photo of the beautiful paloverde tree that stands near their property in Arizona.  My mother lived for 30 years in Arizona after I left home and she always commented when the paloverde were in bloom.

Climbers: Flower of the Day, June 29, 2017

I have no idea what this flowering vine that covers the wall between my house and the street is.  It is rather nonassuming in color and shape, but nonetheless fills a space.IMG_5305

For Cee’s Flower Prompt.

Sun Gonna Shine?

It’s ironic that although the prompt today was sunny, the day dawned cloudy, overcast and raining!  This rarely happens in my part of Mexico. What is keeping my days sunny lately is these rapscallions:

Motocross uh, (Motoclaws) or, “Why Mama Cain’t Blog!”

After two weeks, the kittens, at first confined to the guest bathroom, then to the bathroom or a special large walled-off area we created outside, then to about all of the house except for my bedroom, have definitely made themselves at home.  Click on first photo to read captions and enlarge photos. I also have a video embedded below!

For Cee’s Couples, Twins and Twos Prompt

Wheel

The prompt word today reminded me of this poem I wrote three years ago, and since my sister professed it to be one of her favorites, I’m going to post it again:

IMG_1976In case you think peddlers on wheels are a thing of the past, here’s a photo I took in March, 2017 in La Manzanilla, Mexico.

Wish Wagon

Hear the clanging pots, the squeaky wheels?
Over the rise comes the peddler’s cart––
horse with head down, pulling the load,
the jolly man just dangling the whip over her flanks.

Pitchers, fry pans, mops and brooms,
a doll for sis and kites for the boys
who run to greet this week’s happening,
hoping that Pa has spare bills in his wallet this time.

Now hear the “Whoa, Nell!” and see Zeke, the peddler,
swing his bent frame down from his high perch,
Ma drying her hands as she emerges from the kitchen door,
sis attached to her skirts, shy but drawn irresistibly from safety

to see the wonders that the peddler draws from his wagon:
penny candies by the jar and safety pins.
Needles, spoons and dime novels.
Cloth for Ma of calico and new boots for Pa.

Rag rugs made by Ma and traded for a bucket
and a wash pan his last trip here
that haven’t sold and so he won’t need more.
Jangly bracelets like the city women wear.

Her brief laugh scoffs at them.
The very idea. But one finger runs them round
before it draws away. And in her eyes
there is a wistfulness we will not see again

for thirty more years, until another wagon
crests the hill and drives away with her,
that look again frozen on her face
for eternity.

The prompt word today was wheel.

Cringeworthy

Cringeworthy

A dripping tap, a creaking hinge,
the very sight of a syringe,
running short while on a binge,
well-meaning friends whose words infringe
upon my punch line, or just a tinge
of sarcasm in a response can make me cringe.
But none of these can quite unhinge
me half as much as when I singe
or cut too short my forehead fringe!

If I ever ignite my hair on fire over a birthday cake or let them
cut my fringe this short again, just shoot me!

The prompt today was cringe.
