Milkweed Blossom: Flower of the Day, Aug 21, 2016

Milkweed Blossom

Version 3jdb photo

I’ve seen milkweed pods but never the blossoms until my friend Betty invited me into her back yard to see the Monarch butterfly caterpillars feasting on the leaves of the milkweed she planted for that very purpose.  I’m crazy about the blossoms and got some of her seed to launch my own hatchery. Yes, I got photos of the caterpillars  which I’ll publish another day.  Don’t want to detract attention from these beautiful and unique blooms today.

Another Go at the Giant Hibiscus: Flower of the Day, Aug 11, 2016

For some reason, the hibiscus bloom that was shriveled up yesterday rejuvenated itself today so I must publish these three photos to give you a better idea of its actual size.  I love finding a hibiscus I don’t already have, and this one is a beauty!!! I’m like a mom with a new baby. I just have to keep sharing its progress! (Big baby.)

Click on first photo and arrows to see enlarged views of the other two.

Below is yesterday’s view of the exact same flower.  I’ve never seen a flower “unwilt” like this!! Full one day, wilted the next, full again the next.  https://judydykstrabrown.com/2016/08/10/newest-addition-giant-hibiscus-flower-of-the-day-aug-10-2016/

Newest Addition, Giant Hibiscus: Flower of the Day, Aug. 10, 2016

I had to buy this new hibiscus plant with the largest blooms I’ve ever seen. This photo was taken a day or more past its prime, so the petals are curled back so it is smaller than it was two days ago.  This first photo is a macro, but . . .

zooming out and holding my hand up indicates its approximate size, although before it curled up it was at least 4 inches larger across!

Sitting at my desk I just looked up and realized I have a perfect side view angle, even though I am 20 feet away with window glass in between us. Here is the shot I just took:

A girl can never have too many hibiscus plants!

And, surprise of surprises, here is the exact same flower the next day.  You’ll be able to better get an idea of its size: https://judydykstrabrown.com/2016/08/11/another-go-at-the-giant-hibiscus-flower-of-the-day-aug-11-2016/

Lupine?: Flower of the Day, Aug. 9, 2016

I am believing Tamara that this is lupine.  If you agree or have a different idea of what this flower is, please let me know. Sighted this flower in a field in Sea Ranch, Northern California.

Potential: Flower of the Day, August 7, 2016

I’m sure by the time I see this hibiscus bud again, it will have burst out into the light of day.  I love the potential bound up in this photo.

Hibiscus: Flower of the Day, Aug. 5, 2016

I went out three times to photograph a hibiscus bush with many blooms in different stages, but both of the first two times, no photos showed up on the SD card.  So strange.  When I went out a third time, I checked to be sure I was getting images and I did capture a number of beautiful shots, but when I saw this one, I knew the reason the others hadn’t worked was because the sun wasn’t in the right position earlier for me to capture this shadow of the pistil and stamen.  I think I’m in the process of acquiring a photographic muse.  Hope she gets along with my writing muse, who demands to be the boss!

Surprise Gift: Flower of the Day Aug 4, 2016

This little lady came up volunteer this year right where I can see her every time I leave my house by the kitchen door.  I love the surprise of seeing her for the second time this year. She is just two inches across at her widest part. If she’d been any place else but where she is, I would have overlooked her for sure.  Thanks, nature, for another surprise!
(It’s obvious the bees have been loving her as well.)
