India Shot Lily: FOTD Apr 19, 2023

I love this stage of the lily as much as the fully flowered version which may be seen HERE  along with an explanation of why it is called an India Shot lily!

For a short version: This Canna is famously called Indian Shot. The story is that during an uprising in India, those loyal to the British were running out of ammunition. So they filled the barrels of their rifles with canna seed. The rock hard, perfectly round seed was used as a substitute for lead shot in muzzle loading guns. Hence the name Indian Shot. The plant also has medicinal value. The roots are sweet and edible and the leaves may be used as an outer wrap for tamales. The seeds are used in percussion instruments.

I can’t decide which I like best so I’m including them all. Why not?

Again, I went to buy soil and ended up with an entire trunk full of plants. It started with these lovely kalanchoes. Two plants–you can see a bit of the yellow one in one of the photos. There is such a variety of colors even from plant to plant. One yellow is not exactly the same as the other. I love this unbrash creamy color of yellow as opposed to lemon yellow plus the variation of the orange which unfolds from its blush peach fist to the more vivid orange flower.

I went out to snap a few new photos of flowers and ended up trimming all of the plants in the entire back porch plus the lower level around the studio and the side of the terrace. Two hours later, I came up to post this!  You can hardly pass for the heaps of weeds and dry leaves and branches in the pathways and corridors. A surprise for Pasiano on Monday. I trim, he clears away and bags up.

Dahlia: FOTD Apr 14, 2023

Since I’m rather low on “different” flowers right now, I searched my archives for a flower labelled “Unused.” This one came up, but when I typed its number into my WP media file, I found I’d published it seven years ago. It was pretty enough that I decided to publish it again anyway. Cee does say we should dig into our archives!!! Makes me want to go out and find dahlias to plant. It’s been a long time since I’ve had dahlias in my garden. Unfortunately, the little dogs will probably eat them. They are big salad fans.
