Becky McGuigan’s Birthday Serenade

Becky and her friend Patrick added a special dimension to my surprise birthday party yesterday.  Here is one of Becky’s original songs she sang for the occasion. It’s titled “I’m a Songwriter,” and she certainly is. A song singer as well. She has sung several of mine!!! Thanks, Becky. HERE is the link to Patrick De Gabriel’s song.

Patrick De Gabriel Serenades us at the Surprise Birthday Party

My friend Becky McGuigan brought her friend Patrick to my surprise birthday party and they both entertained us with their original songs. I gave Patrick one of my poems that everyone thinks should be made into a song and he’s hopefully going to provide music for it and perhaps even sing it. Below his photo you can click on a youtube rendition of the one of the songs he sang for us. I’m going to link Becky singing her original song as well. Here is her link.

Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That!

“Sweet Harmony” For MVB “Sing” Prompt, Aug 28, 2024

Sweet Harmony

Nine years ago, when I visited friends from my childhood that I hadn’t seen for scores of years, we had a wonderful time  going through a box of mementos and then gathering around the piano to make  music as sweet as the memories.  Susan is a wonderful pianist and Karen a professional-level singer with a lovely soprano voice that always sends chills down my back.  Patti and I, good high school altos that we once were, created the harmony.  A perfect day with three of my favorite people whom I don’t see often enough.  Sweet Harmony for sure.

Sweet Harmony

As the pianist deftly presses out her chords,
the soprano’s voice slides smoothly from her throat
while we others strain until “Dear Heart” syrups our vocal chords
and we slip with less effort up and down the scale—
old friends singing even older songs.

The small dog snuggles in,
balancing on the plush chair back.
The mother of the pianist and the soprano
observes from her frame atop the piano.
All husbands out and about on other business.

Old letters reread, old memories pulled from forgetfulness,
each of us is left at the end richer—hearts refilled
from a shared past. Every word
has been a song of its own—
our notes blending together
in perfect harmony.

The My Vivid Blog prompt is “sing.”

Banded

From string to string and fret to fret,
they draw us into music’s net.
They strum and pick and blithely finger
notes that make us want to linger,
tap the table, move our feet
to their infectious strumming beat.

They are my favorite sort of band––
unique and playing their own brand
of acoustic, bluesy notes––
a kind of music that denotes
connection to a world of hearts.
Their music woos and cuts and smarts.

Opening sensibilities.
Music that unites and frees
our spirits to commune and soar.
Notes that journey to our core.
Which is what music’s meant to do
in  dancehall, city street or pew.

Good music sets our hats askew,
chases us down and counts a coup.
Stirs our hearts and brings a change.
Astounds us with its depth and range.
Draws us with it, layer on layer,
unites us in communal prayer.

Denominationless, it draws
us in and gives a place to pause
together to survey that place
devoid of sex or age or race.
That place where we unite in song.
Give up ourselves, and sing along.

The prompt today is fret.
