Someone just commented that there should be sound on this post, so  here is Christina Anfossie’s musical rendition of my poem “Naughty little Pleasures.” https://judydykstrabrown.com/2018/04/03/set-to-music-naughty-little-pleasures/

This morning as I did my blog, Christina and Fred worked diligently on their music, but earlier I had awakened to find her having a great time completing a task I’d set out for her the night before.  A few days before, I’d colored one of the wonderful drawings Ansley had drawn for Isidro and me in thanks for our using her and her family for the models for our newest book, “Sunup Sundown Song” and for dedicating the book to her. In the picture I’d colored, I was riding the pig, Isidro was on the goat and Ansley was on the elephant.  In the one I’d left for Christina to color, I think I was standing on my hands on the surfboard, Ansley was in the water and Isidro spread out at rest on the tree, but I’ll leave it to Ansley to tell me if I was right. Her drawings were just too much fun to resist coloring them in.

Later, we had Xmas dinner and played Mexican Train, but I was too busy to remember to take photos.  Our friend Gloria came to spend the day with us. A wonderful time, all-in-all.

Share Your World, Feb 19, 2018

The questions below were asked by Cee on her Share Your World blog prompt:

How do you like your eggs? Egg salad made with mayo, mustard, celery, onions, celery seed and sweet pickles. Even better with grated carrots and mild cheddar cheese on whole wheat bread.

Have you ever met anyone famous? Bob Hope, John Wayne, Barbara Kingsolver, Alice Walker, Carolyn Forche, Dom Deluis, Jackie Gleason, Jack Anderson, Ray Bradbury, Macdonald Carey.

What was the first thing you bought with your own money? A savings bond.  I was a thrifty little girl. When I was five and six, my 11-year-older sister used to raid my piggy bank and when I’d object, say, “Judy, it’s all coming from the same place! ” (She meant that Dad gave us both an allowance.) I remember saying, “Yeah, and it’s all going to the same place, too—to you!”  It seemed important to safeguard my money.  A $25 savings bond cost $18.50 as I recall and in ten years made $6.50 in interest. A better investment than losing it to my sister!

What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week? I loved working with Christine, Fred and Emily—the wonderful musicians and singers who set my rhymed children’s books to music.  We have 6 tracks of the first (Sunup Sundown Song) on garage band.  I wrote the lyrics, Christine the music. Christine did guitar and lead vocals, Emily did backup vocals and fiddle, Fred did uke and percussion.  So fun.  Hope to have it available soon.  The book is all set up on Amazon and being formatted for Kindle.  I need to decide how to distribute the song that goes with it.  Any ideas?

Last Open Mike of the Season at Palapa Joe’s

(Click on first photo to enlarge all photos, then click on arrows to proceed through gallery.)

Palapa Joe’s was pulsing with the heartbeat of its last open mike of the season last night as poets and musicians held  a jam-packed house in thrall.  It’s rare that a bar crowd stays quiet for 2 1/2 hours while entertainment is being staged, but that was the case as act after act wowed us.  Emcee Betty held it all together with her easy repartee and humor. (If you noticed that one of these photos doesn’t belong here, you caught me!  None of the photos of Ron Stock turned out, so I used one of him taken earlier in the day at our writer’s group. )
