Boxing Day with Kittens. Kitty Videos!!!!

With kittens, everything is a toy.  I put the long box their Whiskas Kitten Souffle packets came in on the floor of their playroom when it was empty and it took them about two seconds to devise a number of games to play with it, but no matter how they plotted, they always turned into a dead end.  I then opened up the other end and whole new games ensued.  Eventually, one of the kittens–I think it was Kukla–commandeered the box for her own.  I eventually gave up making videos of the fun and went into the living room.  Frannie jumped up on my lap and it was awhile before I noticed that she had noticed the videos I was trying to put on Youtube.  Her ears perked up and her eyes never left the screen.  It occurred to me I should be filming this and by the time I got my SD card out of the computer and into my camera, she had jumped up on the keyboard.  The last of the four videos is of her admiring herself.  Kittens are half pep pill and half tranquilizer.  They’ve certainly changed my life! Hope you enjoy these videos. Wish I knew how to edit them. (I must have messed up loading the second video so I’ll post it in another post tomorrow.  Have to get up early for day 3 of the kids camp tomorrow so should retire soon!)

Four kittens make good use of an empty Whiskas box:

Once I opened the other end of the Whiskas box, Kukla took permanent possession, but had plenty of visitors:

Frannie was sitting on my lap while I was trying to put the video of her and her siblings on YouTube. Suddenly, she seemed to notice she was a media star and jumped onto the keyboard to watch.

Little Savages

Little Savages

Hungry little savages attack the bedroom rug,
assaulting the tassels as they sortie for a bug.
They pounce upon the jingling ball, climb the sliding screen,
finding potential nourishment in everything they’ve seen.
They fall upon the kitten food and empty out their dishes,
inspecting corners of their bowls–stray morsels now their wishes.
Tidily lick my fingers, tongues curling from their lips,
mining me for fish oil caught in whorls of fingertips.

They can find adventure in anything you’d name—
pursuing errant crickets is like stalking wild game.
Every moving thing around is something to be followed—
to be toyed with, then when humans enter, quickly swallowed.
Frisky little savages win every hunting game.
They pounce upon their victim—live or plastic is the same.
They stalk their largest quarry as though they have a map—
track it down and take a leap and curl up in my lap!

The prompt word today was savage.

Kitten Afternoon

Kitten Afternoon

They tumble off the bed and land on padded feet,
light as feathers blown by wind, their movements sure and fleet.

They leap upon the pillows, sliding down the back
of the leather sofa, this little feline pack.

Off on single sorties, still they must collect
together in a pile to communally reflect

on the adventures of the day: the palm fronds they’ve combatted
and all the tiny spaces they have covertly catted.

They bravely face the secrets under the guest room bed,
approaching cowering crickets with fascinated dread.

They eye the inert bed cat with a careful glance,
then settle down around her, mirroring her stance.

Tumblers and explorers, their days are wildly varied––
sculptures to be batted at, business to be buried.

Laps to be climbed up on, computers to be checked.
Feathers to be batted at. Bird nests to be wrecked.

With their indulgent human approving all of it,
that nests are being shredded matters not a whit.

These kittens are her little bits of kinetic art,
infusing her still house with a spontaneous heart.

Those who say that kittens are a bother and a mess

could not begin to fathom, to comprehend or guess

how those subtle sounds—each skittering and scratching
heard from the next room is another mystery hatching.

Each tiny paw that walks across her unsuspecting chest
as she lies in bed is a most welcome guest,

messing up the covers of her unruffled day
with an invitation to leave her work and play.

Loop de loop

Thought I’d have to do this job myself, but Pasiano took over immediately and did a beautiful job.

Loop de Loop

Every little hole drilled, every little loop
helps attach the walls for—our new kitty coop.
They’re tired of the inside. They want to get out.
They’ve got cabin fever—I’ve not any doubt.

They’ve taken over all my house—bathroom, sala, kitchen.
So many handy spots to hide while they’re mama-ditchin’.
They pulled down all my CD’s and ate my bird’s nest too.
So many great high perches. Always something new.

But mama’s running out of time. She has too much to do
to spend all of her time running this temporary (?) zoo.
Some outside time is what we need—these 4 kittens and me—
a little outside running place will set all of us free.

So Pasiano’s attaching walls over the side gate bars
to protect the kitties from dogs and speeding cars.
Although escape to the big world I’m sure they’d find sublime,
we hope the napa palms are too slippery to climb.

The particle board is all installed.  The kittens in fresh air
leap and climb and hide and play. They find it lovely there.
They don’t answer to their names, their naming is so new;
They are Kukla, Fran and Ollie and the white girl we call Roo.

Will the big cat come to visit, or perhaps a frog or two?
That would give them other interesting things to do.
As for me, I finally have some time to do some writing
with nothing climbing up my leg—scratching, mewing, biting.

Kittens are so precious, a constant fun delight;
but I can’t be petting kittens every hour—day and night.
They had two inside places. Now they have an outside other.
No one can tell who likes it most—the kittens or their mother!

Olie and Roo have a wonderful time rolling in the dirt, playing with palm fronds and trying to climb the slippery trunks of the trees. So do Kukla and Fran for a half hour or so, but . . .

soon I could hear their piping little “mew mew mew”s.  They’d climbed between the bars and were begging for me to open the sliding screen to let them in.  Within minutes, they were curled up in separate drawers in the bathroom, as was Ollie. Soon, only Roo remained outside, asleep in the sun, where she still is two hours later!

I would have shown you many more photos, but alas, my computer drive is full again and I can’t download any.

The prompt today was loop.

Life’s Little Diversions

Life’s Little Diversions

If you follow my blog, you know that my world has been pretty much consumed by the accident that totaled my car— first of all dealing with my injuries, then getting the insurance dealt with, obtaining a rental car, finding a new car, getting it plated and registered and insured and then going for a third time to Guad. to bring it home. In the midst of all of this, a little drama occurred in my life which has shifted my focus away from my problems in order to deal with these new plot details in my life’s production.

The scene opens with Pasiano and I trying to move everything out of the rental car so I can take it to Guad to trade for my newly purchased Honda HRV. I’d been shopping and the trunk was full so we were unloading things and carrying them into the house. Before we’d started, I’d fed Annie the cat, who refused to enter my grounds since the third dog came to live with us and so was always fed on the front wall. On my third trip by the wall, I heard a hissing and looked up to see a miniature feline form had taken the place of Annie. Ironically, it seemed to be a small clone of Lulu, my first cat who had been a mother or older sister of sorts to Annie before moving out and in with the neighbors when I had the gall to bring a second dog to live in our compound. Lulu had passed away a few months before, but here seemed to be a reincarnation.

I pointed her out to Pasiano who seemed as a delighted as I was to see this little creature staking its claim to poor Annie’s breakfast.  As we stood, astonished and chuckling, I heard a sound outside the garage door. Thinking perhaps this was  the stray cat who had been coming around for the past month, I opened the garage door expecting to see her.  Instead, I saw another small kitten standing near the wall next to the driveway.  Before I could point it out to Pasiano, I saw a third kitten clinging to the bougainvillea vine and making her way up to the wall, presumably to join her sister. I called out to Pasiano that there were two more, and by the time he’d made it out to survey the scene, I’d seen the fourth kitten—farther up the vine than the first I’d seen.

I immediately went inside to make another dish of cat food and two of the kittens outside the wall devoured it ravenously.  They were tiny, but seemed to be starved and had no trouble doing away with the adult catfood, which was all that I had.  Luckily, Yolanda was here, and she cleaned out my cat carrier, we found a clean towel to put inside, and soon I’d caught all of the kittens  and brought them inside, but not before the dominant female kitty (three females and one boy who was runt of the litter) had another confrontation with Annie—and won.  Annie retreated to the bushes. I had Pasiano put a third dish of food out for Annie about 20 feet down the wall and I’ll be darned if that little kitten didn’t go down and run Annie away from her new dish of food as well, even though her own dish was still half full.  Talk about moxie!

Well, that was three days ago and the story goes on. That day was taken up by dealing with kitties, taking them to the vet, buying kitten supplies. Getting plates and registration for my new car was put off for a day and going to get my car put off two days. Today I got my car, which is a story for another day. The kitties are doing well and having new adventures every day. Forgottenman tsk tsks and says I’m turning into a cat lady. I am standing firm that that side of my personality is not going to take over—but rather just flavor a life that needed some diversion.  In the meantime, I need a home for four kittens. They are sweet and in three days have gone from running from my attention to running to the door every time I enter their sanctum sanctorum in the guest bathroom.  All are litterbox trained. The minute I put it in the room, they ran to use it with great enthusiasm. The dominant girl checks, and if anyone fails to cover completely, she jumps in and finishes the job. Adorable.

I am spending way too much time inspecting poop  for consistency and volume, so I depend on you to save me.  Surely someone needs one or two of these darling companions!!  Just comment here with your contact details or call me at 387 761 0281 or email me at jubob2@hotmail.com
