“Pendulum” for Word of the Day, Aug 21, 2025

Pendulum

Would passion carry the same voltage
or heartbreak the sting
if from the beginning we knew
that every extreme
brings us a step closer to its opposite?
It is that great pendulum of the I Ching—
that flowing from the yin to yang—
that foretells the fall of great regimes
glorious in their altruism
who, reaching their summit,
must head back again
towards cruel tyranny.

If we’d known this from the start,
each height would become
a day of mourning,
knowing that having reached one apex,
there is no further height to climb to.
and tomorrow, the start of our slow descent
will bring us closer to that other place
where dark will reign.

Part of the power of youth’s sweet ecstasy
as well as bitter heartbreak is that it seems as though
they’ll last forever.
This is the spice of life.
Its tough gristle comes later,
as we recognize that
everything,
everything                   everything
changes          into its
opposite.

The Word of the Day prompt is “Summit.”

In Contrast…For Lens Artists Challenge

Contrast

Sun or moon and smooth or rough,
old or young and clothed or buff––
opposites contrast each other––
tough or easy, breathe or smother.
Shadows can be made with light,
though sun is opposite of night.
Sarcasm depends on this:
words that praise, but really diss.
Life consists of contrasts that
give yin for yang and tit for tat.
If you can’t find a life to fit,
just change into its opposite!
Reach for the hidden, release the found.
Contrasts make the world go round.

Antipodes: for NaPoWriMo Early Bird, 2022

Antipodes

Forever might be short, but never is much longer.
Hating may be brutal, but loving is much stronger.
Cords that bind together may hold at any angle,
but broken bonds of friendship are the ones more apt to strangle.

All things have their antipode and all things have their better.
What we wrap around us may hug or it may fetter.
In a world of opposites, be careful what you choose.
Everything we reach for is something we stand to lose.

Here is the NaPoWriMo early bird prompt:  https://www.napowrimo.net/one-day-to-go-and-an-early-bird-prompt-3/  which is to write a poem based on a line from Emily Dickinson. The line I chose is: “Forever might be short.” Image by Oleg Oprisco. https://www.oprisco.com/

Opposites

If we are touching,
it is back-to-back,
each dreaming
in the opposite direction
of the other.

East and  west,
calm and storm,
sunlight and moonlight,
our wandering soon
will take us in opposite directions.

It was fun. You were the best,
but now it’s time for all the rest,
and if I know the truth of you,
I know you also won’t be blue

when it happens—
that thing we knew would happen
from the beginning,
when two solitary souls
investigated
what if.

We were to write something to go with this photo. Here is the site for the challenge: https://lifeafter50forwomen.com/2020/12/01/mlmm-photo-challenge-you-are-here/

Yin and Yang

                                               Yin and Yang

I wrote about Yin and Yang in a much earlier post that hardly any of my present followers read. Go here to read that poem: https://judydykstrabrown.com/2014/06/21/changing-lines/
