Lost

Lost my dolly, don’t know where.
She’s got no clothes and got no hair.
She’s somewhere out there lost and bare,
thinking that I do not care.
I’d go out looking, but don’t dare.

That babysitter over there
(My mother calls her our au pair)
came by foot and ship and air
from a country named Zaire
to sit here on her derriere
and watch me with her icy stare.

I open up our Frigidaire.
Could my dolly be in there?
I climb up on a bedroom chair
and go through Mommy’s underwear.
I do not think that she would care.
I find my brother’s whistle there,
hidden in that lacy lair,
and think it really isn’t fair.
It’s every mother’s cruel nightmare.
My dolly isn’t anywhere!

I had to stop the car to take this photo. I wish I knew the true story behind it. I can’t imagine any little girl throwing out her doll, and the lot was surrounded by a barbed wire fence. Someone must have tossed it in there. A mean boy? A jealous brother? Was it unwanted loot from a burglary? My mom and I once rode all the way back out to the dump from town to retrieve a doll’s head we’d thrown away. All the way home, we’d both been thinking about it, sitting there amidst coffee grounds and broken light bulbs. We had pulled into the garage when my mom turned to look at me and said, “Do you want to go back out and get that doll’s head?” I nodded. We did, and I have that head to this very day. If my mom had been with me, one or the other of us would have gotten through that barbed wire somehow. As it is, this image is the only part of the doll that I was able to rescue.

A Dog’s Life (The Wish)

A Dog’s Life (The Wish)

We wish our mom would come to bed but beg to no avail.
Our attempts to draw her in have gone beyond the pale!
We break our vow of silence to bark and bark and bark.
Our pleas, extravagantly loud, echo through the dark.

But she is so disorganized that she can’t come to rest.
There’s always one more task to do before she joins our nest.
Each dirty dish must be rinsed off, each Wordle game be played.
No single task so trivial that it can be delayed.

Headed for bed, there is another detour she must make
as she remembers one leftover slice of chocolate cake.
Once in the fridge, a pitcher of sangria comes to view.
Handy to wash down cake, she has a glass of it, or two.

Through the Virginia creeper, the Xmas lights are winking
and of course she must go out to end their constant blinking.
Once there, the pool calls her, so she has a little swim.
On the way to bed, she can resist no task or whim.

She trims the bougainvillea that spills over the water,
resisting not one dumb excuse to fool around and potter.
Meanwhile, we are waiting to curl up by her side
to stretch out on her legs and sleep. This wait we can’t abide.

We’ll curl up on her sweater so hastily abandoned,
right here on the bed, where luckily it landed
when she changed into her nightgown an hour ago or two—
before she found those other things that she just had to do.

It’s like this every evening wherein there’s no debate
about the fact that we will have to wait and wait and wait
until she finally joins us with no more for her to do
except work on her computer for an hour or two!

That a dog’s life isn’t easy is not hyperbolic
when you share it with a Mom who is a workaholic!!!

Prompt words are break, beg, extravagant, trivial and disorganized.

Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge: Beverage

Carlos Jr’s favorite drink, “La Bandera” or flag.. since it is the colors of the Mexican flag. The salted glass is sangrita, the white or clear one is tequila and the green is key lime juice. He alternated sips of each.

Romance is better on the swings
for it’s true Cupid has wings
and if he inspires a kiss,
it’s clear that you don’t want to miss
that moment on your mutual ride
where your lips might coincide,
and on the teeter-totter or slide
it’s harder to go side-by-side.
