Curious

Curious

While wandering through the wilderness, I saw a flash of pink
not typical of nature—more like a bathroom sink.
I couldn’t quite imagine what it could have been.
It wasn’t very natural. It surely wasn’t zen.
If I went in search of it, I don’t know what I’d do
with any possible creature of that uncharming hue.
If I factored in the color, it wouldn’t be selectable,
for what kind of person would consider it collectible?
I guess it’s just as lucky that I didn’t ever find it.
That’s why when it eluded me, I didn’t really mind it.

Yes, I know that this is a very weird little poem. So, what else was I to do with prompt words such as pink, factor, charming and wilderness? Here are the links:

Smooth Talker: Ghazal for dVerse Poets

IMG_6512

Smooth Talker

Whatever tales you chose to tell, after dark,
perhaps filled out your empty shell, after dark.

Those blusterings that in the day came to naught,
may all have served you very well, after dark.

But all those love lessons that your voice once taught
no longer ring out like a bell after dark

As in the web of years you’re firmly caught,
you may as well your passions quell after dark.

Since my affection’s not so easily bought,
your words instead become a knell after dark.

I apologize to this young man for always using his photo when I need an illustration of a very handsome man. In no way is he the real subject of the poem.  The ghazal is a very complicated form that involves repetition of words as well as internal rhyme.  I’ve added the end rhyme just for my own satisfaction. For an explanation of the form, see: dVerse Poets

Memory Games

Memory Games

My memory’s in jeopardy of growing rather fuzzy.
I can’t remember punch lines like “He wasn’t fuzzy, wuzzy?”
Quips like “Betty Botter bought a bit of bitter butter”
used to fly right off my tongue, but now they sit and flutter.

It’s true my thoughts surround me but they won’t assume an order.

It is as though instead I have become a memory hoarder
with stacks of memories piled up in my halls of memory
where perhaps I could still find them—if I had the energy.

But as is, names aren’t stacked near where my face recall is kept,
so when I meet acquaintances, I’m chillingly inept
at sorting out the names to go with their familiar faces.
This trying to put face with name sure puts me through my paces!

Somehow the very minute I recognize a face,
its name flies out the window, so I hasten up my pace

to scurry ’round the corner before they might see me.
It’s not my heart avoiding them. Just blame my memory!

The only reassurance in all this memory Hell
is that lately I have noticed others scrambling as well,
so perhaps it isn’t only me who’s exercising guile
trying to avoid my friends in the grocery aisle.

Prompts today were memory, jeopardy, surround and fuzzy. Links below:

Incantation for the Rainy Season

IMG_8590

Incantation for the Rainy Season

I admit I’m taking sanctuary, waiting for the rain.
I really cannot help it that I’m foolish and I’m vain.
It’s lack of all humidity causing my hibernation.
This dryness is my scapegoat. I am needing rain’s hydration.

Once there’s water in the air, my cavities will out,
and all these ugly wrinkles are destined to fill out.
I’m praying to the rain gods, though I don’t like to beg,
for the wrinkles on my torso are spreading to my leg.

My hand backs are so furrowed they’re impervious to lotions.
My crepey neck defies even my most expensive potions.
I’m succumbing to my wrinkles. I’ve barely a smooth patch.
I think I’d be the winner in a “most wrinkled” match.

In the aging Olympics, I would surely win the gold.
I’ve passed from young to middle-aged and ended up at “old.”
I’ve given up on vagueness and modesty and pride.
I’m bluntly revealing the condition of my hide.

Yes, I’ve succumbed to wrinkles. and my only hope’s the rain.
Surely with humidity, I’ll plump right up again!!!!

Frangipani Fever

Frangipani Fever

Yes, the scenery is breathtaking. In fact, it is uncanny,
and what mainly takes my breath away is the frangipani.
The color is my favorite—its texture velvet-soft—
but see its pollen messengers descending from aloft?
They permeate the summer sky. They go where e’er they please.
They wind up in my nostril hairs, then spin out in a sneeze.
When I call it “hay fever,” I know it is a gaffe,
but “frangipani fever” only makes folks laugh.
As I explode each morning—blowing, coughing, wheezing,
I fear the fact they’re “breathtaking” is something less than pleasing.

Prompts today are breathtaking, gaffe, zenith and velvet. Here are links:

I can’t remember where I was today when I had to stop and take a photo of this little beauty. (Smitha has told me it is a Crossandra. Thanks, Smitha. I see it is also called the Firecracker Plant.)

Welcome

Welcome

My instinct is toward empathy, but I must admit
it’s harder to have empathy for someone who’s a twit.
And though lack of hospitality is something of a sin,
some guests are more welcome going out than coming in!!!

RDP didn’t post a prompt today, so we’re limited to three. They are instinct, empathy and hospitality. Here are the links:
