India Shot Lily: FOTD Apr 19, 2023

I love this stage of the lily as much as the fully flowered version which may be seen HERE  along with an explanation of why it is called an India Shot lily!

For a short version: This Canna is famously called Indian Shot. The story is that during an uprising in India, those loyal to the British were running out of ammunition. So they filled the barrels of their rifles with canna seed. The rock hard, perfectly round seed was used as a substitute for lead shot in muzzle loading guns. Hence the name Indian Shot. The plant also has medicinal value. The roots are sweet and edible and the leaves may be used as an outer wrap for tamales. The seeds are used in percussion instruments.

Dahlia: FOTD Apr 14, 2023

Since I’m rather low on “different” flowers right now, I searched my archives for a flower labelled “Unused.” This one came up, but when I typed its number into my WP media file, I found I’d published it seven years ago. It was pretty enough that I decided to publish it again anyway. Cee does say we should dig into our archives!!! Makes me want to go out and find dahlias to plant. It’s been a long time since I’ve had dahlias in my garden. Unfortunately, the little dogs will probably eat them. They are big salad fans.

Bougainvillea for FOTD Apr 13, 2023

The leafcutter ants have not been stealing my bougainvillea as much this year. Thus, this healthy crop.

Plumeria and Palm Flowers FOTD Apr 12, 2023

The palm flowers are dried and about to start raining down on everything below . This is one stalk overlooked by the tree cutters. I’m just hoping a big wind doesn’t come up and blow them all into the pool.  Pretty, but messy. It’s good to have leaves and flowers on the Plumeria, though. It has been naked branches since before Xmas.

Not much detail, but I loved this arm of bougainvillea reaching up into the sky.
