Hold the Tabasco, Please!!!

I was due to go to Tabasco for a Poetry/Painting exhibition where poets submit poems and artists create paintings inspired by them, but I think I must give it a miss and let my poem go on without me.

Here is a quote from a story about the heat wave here in Mexico whose link is given below.  “A report identified Veracruz (10 deaths), San Luis Potosí (four deaths) and Tabasco (four deaths) as the hardest-hit states.” See more from the report HERE. (For some, that link may hit a paywall and not be viewable. But the headline makes its content clear: “Mexico is about to see its highest temperatures ever, experts warn”.)

Reconstruction: for Becky’s Squares, May 23, 2024

The epicenter of the October 2022 earthquake was on the coast of Mexico, but it caused big jerks here. I was in the car and thought it was a really strong wind buffeting the car back and forth. Then I saw the telephone poles swaying and people streaming from the stores into the street. There was one quake of just a minute or two followed by another. There wasn’t any damage that I could see, except when I got home I noticed cracks in my house and entry arch that over the months got wider and wider until at last my door to the street wouldn’t latch at all as the cracks above it had widened so much. Cracks in my house appeared from front to back door in my entry hall which is really the juncture of the two wings of my L shaped house and when my friend Agustin inspected the house he determined that the two wings of the house had never really been joined by metal joists but just by concrete All major repairs were finally completed, although smaller cracks are on my “to do” list. The two statues in the first photo were not broken by the earthquake, but rather by my cats who knocked them off their pedestals. luckily, they remained intact from the waist down and so have been converted into planters.

This is Your Life, Sharon!!!!

Sharon-2024

We’ve been gathered for a few days to celebrate my friend Sharon’s 80th birthday. So far we’ve had a pre-birthday party for Sharon and two friends, an art day and a party preparation day. Tomorrow is the big day. I’ve had fun surveying all the treasures in her house as it is filled with first her own work and then the work of those she has done shows with over the years. She has huge books full of her photography, drawers filled with treasures gleaned from the Bone Room, the Tucson Gem and Mineral show and countless other sources. When I first met her in 1989 while doing shows, she made Universal Totems which you’ll see on the walls. Before that she was a weaver and you’ll see her throws folded neatly on a shelf in one of the photos. After doing years of shows with the totems, she turned to photography. Her photos are stunning and deserve to be in National Geographic or the National Gallery. Later she turned to incredible felt sculptures. You can see her whimsical animals on shelves below and see the over 400 felt cactus figures she made to give away at her party…and that she taught us to make. (See my earlier post.) Then there are the needlepoint pillows that display her own, not patterned artistry. They display portraits of her grandchildren and flowers and terracotta pottery and other subjects—60,000 stitches per pillow!! And they take months to design and produce. You will see Sharon, preparing one of 4 cakes for her 80th birthday celebration dinner—55 people expected! Also her husband John and three friends who came from Southern California and Mexico to help her celebrate–including me!

If you would like to explore more of Sharon’s work, you can find her online gallery HERE.

Proper Placement for dVerse Poets

Proper Placement

Sometimes I think I’m tired of moving here and there
and that my favorite place of all is right here in my chair.
I’ll give up future travels for places in my head.
My favorite place is in my mind.  I’ll travel there instead!

Today for dVerse Poets, we are to write a Quadrille on the topic of “Place.”

For The Sunday Stills Color Challenge: Cobalt Blue

For the Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge, the prompt is cobalt blue.

“Cosmos” For The Sunday Whirl Wordle 654

Cosmos

My soul is restless, dark and lost.
Its flickering flame is tempest-tossed.
Ceaseless waves assault my ears,
their chanting pulse swelling my fears.

Slipping  into their restless grasp,
I void my terror in a gasp.
No fan of chance, I cast my lot
into that teeming marble pot

where those lost futures roil and toss,
whose progress is the potion’s loss.
Where is that world secure and calm
that cups one in a soothing balm?

Those caught in it feel its caress
unaware of that duress
that catches others in its swell––
one world encompassing Heaven and Hell.

For the latest Sunday Whirl, the prompt words are: waves slip void soul restless dark chanting flickering pulse chance marble fan.
